BRaymondSawyer,agraphicdesignundergraduateatNewCollegeDurham,saysheisconcernedbythenaivetyofsomeofhisfellowstudentswhendealingwiththeirfinances.“I’msurprisedbythelackofmaturitysomeofthemhavewhenitcomestomoney,”hesays.“Wehadbeenatcollegeforjustoveraweekwhensomeofmyfellowstudentsgottheirgrantsthrough-andtheirfirstthoughtwasspendingmoneyonclothesandplanningnightsout,whichIcouldn’tbeliever.Manystudentsseemunawareofthestateoftheeconomyrightnow.”Sawyersaystheprevailingeconomicconditionshaveinfluencedhischoiceofwheretostudy.Helivesathome,justafewmilesfromhiscollege,whichmeansheisabletorunaWebdesignbusinessthathelpseasehismoneyworries.“RentandmortgagesarecostlythesedaysandIguessthat’swhatswayedmetowardstudyinglocally,”hesays.“IonlyhavetospendthreedaysaweekatcollegeandIcantraveleasilybycar,devotingtherestofmytimetodevelopingmybusiness.”
CSawyercountshimselffortunatethatheisself-employed.ArecentsurveycommissionedbyrecruitmentagencyReedreckonsthatoverhalfofgraduatesare“concerned”withfindingajobinthecurrentclimate.Jobsecurityisalsobecomingamajorconcern;oneinfourgraduatessaytheywouldbewillingtosacrificeuptofivepercentoftheirincomeinexchangeforjobsecurityforthreeyears.Asignificantnumberofgraduatesaremovingtowardcreativemarketingandmediasectors,shunningCityjobs,andwatchingbanksandotherfinancialservicesfirmsfalloverhasbeenparticularlydishearteningforstudentswhohadplannedtoworkintheSquareMile(伦敦金融城).Reportssuggestthatmanyarenowalsoconsideringteachingasanoption.
D“Withmanyrecentgraduatesstilllookingforjobsinadifficulteconomicclimate,undergraduatesneedtorememberthereisaserioussidetouniversity,”cautionsReed’smarketinghead,MarkRhodes.“It’simportantthatincominguniversitystudentshaveaneyeontheirfuture.”Rhodeswarnsstudentsnottoleavetheirjob-huntingtoolate.“Ifyouaretryingtogetontoagraduateprogramfortheyearyougraduate,youmayhavetostartpreparingatthestartofyourthirdyeartoavoidmissingthedeadlines,”hesays.Rhodesalsoadvisesspeakingwithauniversitycareersadviserattheearliestopportunitytogetthelatestnewsonjobsavailable.
ENickWasson-Jones,whohasrecentlygraduatedinengineeringfromtheUniversityofSheffield,saysthenextfewmonthswillbetough.“Myadvicetostudentsistogetsomerelevantworkexperience,”hesays.“Ihaven’tbeenabletogetpasttheCVstageandIthinkthat’sbecauseIcan’tdemonstratethatIhaveworkedinthefieldIamlookingtoenter.ItIcouldgobacktomyuniversitydays,IwoulddefinitelydosomeworkexperienceinmyfirstorsecondyearbeforeIgotstuckintomydissertationandexamsinmyfinalyear.”
FThird-yearstudentDanielleMaughanhasworkedapart-timejobsinceshestartedhercriminologyandpsychologycourseatLiverpoolJohnMooresUniversity,butshesaysshe’sfindingittoughertomakeendsmeet.“I’veworkedinalocalpubsincestartinguniversity,:
shesays,“butthingsaregettinghardernow.mystudentloanjustcoversmyrentfortheyear,sohavingajobisessential.”YetMaughanadmitstobeingpooratmanagingherfinances.“I’mnotgreatwithmoneytostartwith,sothingscangetalittletough.”
GUnfortunatelymanystudentsarerespondingtothefinancialcrisisbyburyingtheirheadinthesand,allowingmoneyproblemstosnowballasgraduationdrawsnearer.AsurveyconductedbytheNationalUnionofStudentsconcludesthatmanystudentsareunawareofeventhebasiccostsofliving,anddon’thavetheinformationandguidancetheyneedtomanagetheirownfinances.Thesurveysuggeststhattheaveragecostofuniversitylifeisnearly$450ayearhigherthanstudentsexpect.
HInaddition,somestudentsareoverlyoptimisticaboutbeingabletoreceivefinancialsupportintheformofbursaries(奖学金).Thesurveyshowthat42percentbelievetheywillbeeligible,whereasonly28percentreceiveone.Theissueofbursariesisfurthercomplicatedbyconfusionoverwhatstudentsareactuallyentitledto–leadingtothousandsofeligiblestudentsfailingtoclaimlastyear,saystheOfficeforFairAccess.

J“Wearegettingasteadystreamofenquiries,especiallyfrommaturestudents,”saysJemmaSamuels,managerofstudentcharityUniaid.“Ouraimistohelpstudentsplanforthecostsoflivingbeforetheygettouniversity.Thereisplentyofsupportaround,butstudentsdon’talwaysknowwheretogetit.Mosttendtorelyonfriendsandparentsforadvice,whichmaybeinaccurateorsimplyoutofdate.Theproblemisparticularlybadforinternationalstudents,whocanrunintohardshipveryquickly.”Uniaidrunstrainingeventsforstudentsandhasaseriesofonlinetoolsthatcanbeusedtocalculatecostsandkeepundergraduatesabreastofwhatsupporttheycanaccess.
