LittleLamb,whomadethee?
Dostthouknowwhomadethee?
OneofthemostfamouspoemsinBlake’scollectionSongsofInnocence,“TheLamb”establishesitsthemequicklyinthefirsttwolines.Whenthenarratorasksthelambifitknowswhocreatedit,itisnotcallingattentiontothebiologicalparents.Thenarratorspecificallyasksaboutthenatureofcreationinthedivinesense.Thenarratordoesnotthinkthecreatorisawhat,butawhom,andthiswhomhasthepowertoactuallycreatelife.

Theselinesbegintosuggestasecondlayerofmeaningpertainingtotheimageofthelamb.TheyrecalltheswaddlingclothsofthebabyJesus,andofhishairthatwaspurportedtobelike“lamb’swool.”Thebrightnessofthelamb,andthebrightnessofChrist,comesfromwithin,andalsodemonstratestheirabilitytoreflectlight.Thewhitestlambreflectsthemostlight.
Lines7–8

Makingallthevalesrejoice?
Thereferencetothelamb’svoicesuggestsadoublemeaning.Ofcourse,thebleatingoflambssoundsvery“tender,”butBlakerefersalsotothevoiceofChrist.ThewordsandthespeechofChristareoftenthoughtofas“tender”becausetheyacclaimloveand“rejoice”inlifeitself.The“vales”alsohaveanadditionalmeaning.Valesarevalleys,andsoherethenarratoronceagainasksthereadertothinkabouttheconceptoflandscape,surroundingsandhowoneisinfluencedbythem.

Withthisnewrepetition,onehasanewperspectiveonthelamb.Thisrepetitionemphasizesthelargess,thegrandeurofcreativity.Specifically,oneiscalledupontocontemplatethecreationofbothabiologicallambandafigurativelamb.Oneisaskedtoconsidertheirrelationshiptoeachother,andtotheDivine.
Lines11–12
OnlynowdoesBlakeintroducehisnarratorintheformof“I.”Onecanguessthatthis“I”couldbeBlake,oronecouldsupposethatitisthepiperrepresentedin“IntroductiontoSongsofInnocence.”Theidentityisprobablynotasimportantastheideathatthispersonseemstounderstandatsomelevelthenatureofcreation,andisenthusiastictosharewiththelambandwiththereaderwhatheorsheknows!
Therepetitionhintsonceagainatthedouble,subtlenatureofthelambasaconcept.
Lines13–14
Nowthespeakerbringsthedoubledefinitionofthelambintoamoreobviouslight.Therecanbenomistakethatnotonlydoesthenarratorrefertoabiologicallamb,buthealsoreferstoJesusChristintheimageofthelamb.Sinceheiswritingaboutthenatureofcreationitself,thenonecanbegintodrawconclusionsaboutwhatBlakebelievestobetrueaboutthespiritualaswellasthemundane.WhydoesBlakeusetheword“call”twice?
Perhaps,itistoillustratetheideaofbeing“called”intoserviceoftheDivine.Sincethisisapoemaboutcreation,perhapsBlakehintsthattobecalledtocreativityisdivine.ThisisathemethatisseenagainandagaininBlake’spoetry.
Lines15–16
TheselinesgivereferencetoChrist’smessagethat“themeekshallinherittheworld”andtheconceptthatgentlenessandloveistheidealwayofbehavingintheworld.Blake’snarratoralsolinksthebehavioroftheDivinetothebehaviorofalittlelamb.ThenhemakesfurtherconnectiontotheideathattheCreatorandthelittlechildareoneandthesame.OnealsocanguessthatBlakeseescreativityasachildlikeoccupation.Furthermore,thefactthattheDivinedecidedtoactuallycomeintotheworld,asanychildwould,givesoneanunderstandingofone’sownnature.
Lines17–18
Blakehasfunwithlanguageinthesetwolines.Themysticalrelationshipbetween“I”and“thou”hasoftenbeentheverydefinitionofGod.Theequivalentvalueofthechildandthelamb,suggestsadivineconnectionandcomparisonbetweenthehumanbeingandtheDivine,andthehigherconsciousnessandlowerunconsciousness.RememberthatpsychologyasitisunderstoodinthetwentiethcenturydidnotexistinBlake’sera.ThisconceptofdualconsciousnessesmayhavesurprisedBlake’sreadership.Thefactthatheemphasizesthisideawiththesecondofthetwolinescanonlyservetotellthereaderthattherehasbeennomistakeininterpretingtheconnection.BothhumanchildandanimalchildhaveanequalrelationshiptotheDivineinbothnameandquality.
Lines19–20
Therepetitionhereservestocompletethisconceptwithablessing.Thenarrator’srevelationisnowfullyrevealed.Heblessesthelamb,himself,andtheChristwithenthusiasm.
