Thispaperpresentsan“adhoc”methodologyforthedesignofdiagnosticsoftwareforthedetectionandisolationoffaultsonsensorsandactuatorsofaremotelycontrolledsemiscaleYF-22researchaircraft.Startingfromthestructuralanalysisofthenonlineardynamicequationsoftheaircraft,analgorithm,basedonthe“variableseliminationmethod”,isproposedtocomputeasetofresidualequationshavingallthepossiblefaultsignatures.Thequalityofeachresidualequationhasbeenrankedaccordingtoacostfunctionchosentorepresentimplementationissuessuchasthesensitivitytomeasurementnoiseinthenumericalcomputationofhighorderderivatives.Analgorithmisthenproposedforselectingasubsetofresidualequationswithmaximum“failureisolability”andminimumcost,accordingtotheselectedperformancecriteria.TheissueofrobustificationoftheresidualequationstomodelingerrorsandmeasurementnoisehasbeenaddressedthroughnonlinearuncertaintymappingusingNeuralNetworksinconjunctiontoFIRfilters.Thefaultdetectionandisolationmethodhasbeenappliedbyinjectingsimulatedfaultstoflightdatacollectedbyasemi-scaleYF-22researchaircraftmodel.

Theinherenthysteresisinapneumaticartificialmuscle(PAM)makesitdifficulttocontrolaccuratelythepositionofthePAM’sendeffector.Thishysteresiscausesenergylossandtheareaofthehysteresisloopisdependentontheamplitudeofthemotionandontheunderlyingcausesofthehysteresisphenomenon.Thismeansthatifthehysteresisenergylossisproperlycompensated,amoreaccuratepositioningwouldbeachieved.Inthispaper,thepressure/lengthhysteresisofasinglePAMismodeledbyusingaMaxwell-slipmodel.Theobtainedmodelisusedinthefeedforwardpathofacascadepositioncontrolscheme,inwhichtheinnerloopisdesignedtocopewiththenonlinearityofthepressurebuildupinsidethePAM,whereastheouterloopisdesignedtocopewiththenonlinearityofthePAMdynamicsitself.TheexperimentalresultsshowthatpositioncontrolofasinglePAM–masssystemwithhysteresiscompensation(HC)iseffectivelyimprovedcomparedtoacontrolwithoutHC,andthecontrolsystemshowshighrobustnesstoloadchanges.
