Inthepresentstudy,wereportthesystematicinvestigationoftheeffectofchemicaloxidationonthestructureofsingle-walledcarbonnanotubes(SWNTs)byusingdifferentoxidants.Theoxidationprocedurewascharacterizedbyusinginfraredspectroscopyandtransmissionelectronmicroscopy(TEM).TheSWNTswereproducedbychemicalvapordeposition(CVD)andoxidizedwiththreekindsofoxidants:
(1)nitricacid(2.6M),
(2)amixtureofconcentratedsulfuricacid(98wt%)andconcentratednitricacid(16M)(v/v=3/1)and(3)KMnO4.TheresultsrevealthatthedifferentfunctionalgroupscanbeintroducedwhentheSWNTsaretreatedwithdifferentoxidants.RefluxingindilutenitricacidcanbeconsideredasamildoxidationforSWNTs,introducingthecarboxylicacidgroupsonlyatthoseinitialdefectsthatalreadyexist.Theabundanceofthecarboxylicacidgroupsgeneratedwiththisoxidantremainedconstantalongwiththetreatingtime.Incontrast,sonicationofSWNTsinH2SO4/HNO3increasedtheincidenceofcarboxylicacidgroupsnotonlyatinitialdefectsitesbutalsoatnewlycreateddefectsitesalongthewallsofSWNTs.Comparedtothetwooxidantsabove,whenKMnO4inalkaliwasusedastheoxidant,whichisrelativelymild,differentamountsof-OH,-C=O,and-COOHgroupswereintroduced.TheoxidationprocessesbeginmainlywiththeoxidationoftheinitialdefectsthatariseduringtheCVDgrowthoftheSWNTsandareaccompaniedbyprocessesthatcanberoughlydividedintotwosteps:
(1)thedefect-generatingstepand
(2)thedefect-consumingstep.Specifically,duringthedefect-generatingstep,theoxidantsattackthegraphenestructurebyelectrophilicreactionsandgenerateactivesitessuchas-OHand-C=O.Thisstepdependsontheoxidant'sabilitytogenerate-C-OHgroupsandtotransformtheminto-C=Ogroups.Duringthedefect-consumingstep,thegraphenestructureofthetubewasdestroyedbytheoxidationofthegeneratedactivesitesinstep1.Thedefect-consumingstepmostlycountsontheabilityoftheoxidanttoetch/destroythegraphite-likestructurearoundthealreadygenerated-C=Oandtheirneighborhoodgroups.

Grapheneisanintriguingmaterialwithpropertiesthataredistinctfromthoseofothergraphiticsystems(1-5).Thefirstsamplesofpristinegraphenewereobtainedby'peelingoff'(2,6)andepitaxialgrowth(5,7).Recently,thechemicalreductionofgraphiteoxidewasusedtoproducecovalentlyfunctionalizedsingle-layergrapheneoxide(8-15).However,chemicalapproachesforthelarge-scaleproductionofhighlyconductinggraphenesheetsremainelusive.Here,wereportthattheexfoliationreintercalation-expansionofgraphitecanproducehigh-qualitysingle-layergraphenesheetsstablysuspendedinorganicsolvents.Thegraphenesheetsexhibithighelectricalconductanceatroomandcryogenictemperatures.LargeamountsofgraphenesheetsinorganicsolventsaremadeintolargetransparentconductingfilmsbyLangmuir-Blodgettassemblyinalayer-by-layermanner.Thechemicallyderived,high-qualitygraphenesheetscouldleadtofuturescalablegraphenedevices.

Thespecificheatandthermalconductivityofmillimeter-longalignedcarbonmultiwallnanotubes(MWNT's)havebeenmeasured.Asarolled-upversionofgraphenesheets,aMWNTofafewtensnmdiameterisfoundtodemonstrateastrikinglylineartemperature-dependentspecificheatovertheentiretemperaturerangemeasured(10-390K).TheresultsindicatethatinterwallcouplinginMWNT'sisratherweakcomparedwithitsparentform,graphite,sothatonecantreataMWNTasafewdecoupledtwo-dimensionalsinglewalltubules.Thethermalconductivityisfoundtobelow,indicatingtheexistenceofsubstantialamountsofdefectsintheMWNT'spreparedbyachemical-vapor-depositionmethod.[S0163-1829(99)50714-5].
