Anearthquakeandahurricanemayhavedelayedthisday,butthisisadaythatwouldnotbedenied.
Forthisday,wecelebrateDr.MartinLutherKing,Jr.’sreturntotheNationalMall.Inthisplace,hewillstandforalltime,amongmonumentstothosewhofatheredthisnationandthosewhodefendedit;ablackpreacherwithnoofficialrankortitlewhosomehowgavevoicetoourdeepestdreamsandourmostlastingideals,amanwhostirredourconscienceandtherebyhelpedmakeourunionmoreperfect.
AndDr.Kingwouldbethefirsttoremindusthatthismemorialisnotforhimalone.Themovementofwhichhewasapartdependedonanentiregenerationofleaders.Manyareheretoday,andfortheirserviceandtheirsacrifice,weowethemoureverlastinggratitude.Thisisamonumenttoyourcollectiveachievement.(Applause.)
Somegiantsofthecivilrightsmovement?
-likeRosaParksandDorothyHeight,BenjaminHooks,ReverendFredShuttlesworth?
-they’vebeentakenfromusthesepastfewyears.Thismonumentatteststotheirstrengthandtheircourage,andwhilewemissthemdearly,weknowtheyrestinabetterplace.
Andfinally,therearethemultitudesofmenandwomenwhosenamesneverappearinthehistorybooks?
-thosewhomarchedandthosewhosang,thosewhosatinandthosewhostoodfirm,thosewhoorganizedandthosewhomobilized?
-allthosemenandwomenwhothroughcountlessactsofquietheroismhelpedbringaboutchangesfewthoughtwereevenpossible.“Bythethousands,”saidDr.King,“faceless,anonymous,relentlessyoungpeople,blackandwhite…havetakenourwholenationbacktothosegreatwellsofdemocracywhichweredugdeepbythefoundingfathersintheformulationoftheConstitutionandtheDeclarationofIndependence.”Tothosemenandwomen,tothosefootsoldiersforjustice,knowthatthismonumentisyours,aswell.
NearlyhalfacenturyhaspassedsincethathistoricMarchonWashington,adaywhenthousandsuponthousandsgatheredforjobsandforfreedom.ThatiswhatourschoolchildrenrememberbestwhentheythinkofDr.King-?
hisboomingvoiceacrossthisMall,callingonAmericatomakefreedomarealityforallofGod’schildren,prophesizingofadaywhenthejanglingdiscordofournationwouldbetransformedintoabeautifulsymphonyofbrotherhood.
Itisrightthatwehonorthatmarch,thatweliftupDr.King’s“IHaveaDream”speech?
-forwithoutthatshiningmoment,withoutDr.King’sgloriouswords,wemightnothavehadthecouragetocomeasfaraswehave.Becauseofthathopefulvision,becauseofDr.King’smoralimagination,barricadesbegantofallandbigotrybegantofade.Newdoorsofopportunityswungopenforanentiregeneration.Yes,lawschanged,butheartsandmindschanged,aswell.
Lookatthefacesherearoundyou,andyouseeanAmericathatismorefairandmorefreeandmorejustthantheoneDr.Kingaddressedthatday.Wearerighttosavorthatslowbutcertainprogress-?
progressthat’sexpresseditselfinamillionways,largeandsmall,acrossthisnationeverysingleday,aspeopleofallcolorsandcreedslivetogether,andworktogether,andfightalongsideoneanother,andlearntogether,andbuildtogether,andloveoneanother.
SoitisrightforustocelebratetodayDr.King’sdreamandhisvisionofunity.Andyetitisalsoimportantonthisdaytoremindourselvesthatsuchprogressdidnotcomeeasily;thatDr.King’sfaithwashard-won;thatitsprungoutofaharshrealityandsomebitterdisappointments.
ItisrightforustocelebrateDr.King’smarvelousoratory,butitisworthrememberingthatprogressdidnotcomefromwordsalone.Progresswashard.Progresswaspurchasedthroughenduringthesmackofbillyclubsandtheblastoffirehoses.Itwasboughtwithdaysinjailcellsandnightsofbombthreats.Foreveryvictoryduringtheheightofthecivilrightsmovement,thereweresetbacksandthereweredefeats.
Weforgetnow,butduringhislife,Dr.Kingwasn’talwaysconsideredaunifyingfigure.Evenafterrisingtoprominence,evenafterwinningtheNobelPeacePrize,Dr.Kingwasvilifiedbymany,denouncedasarabblerouserandanagitator,acommunistandaradical.Hewasevenattackedbyhisownpeople,bythosewhofelthewasgoingtoofastorthosewhofelthewasgoingtooslow;bythosewhofeltheshouldn’tmeddleinissuesliketheVietnamWarortherightsofunionworkers.Weknowfromhisowntestimonythedoubtsandthepainthiscausedhim,andthatthecontroversythatwouldswirlaroundhisactionswouldlastuntilthefatefuldayhedied.
Iraiseallthisbecausenearly50yearsaftertheMarchonWashington,ourwork,Dr.King’swork,isnotyetcomplete.Wegatherhereatamomentofgreatchallengeandgreatchange.Inthefirstdecadeofthisnewcentury,wehavebeentestedbywarandbytragedy;byaneconomiccrisisanditsaftermaththathasleftmillionsoutofwork,andpovertyontherise,andmillionsmorejuststrugglingtogetby.Indeed,evenbeforethiscrisisstruck,wehadenduredadecadeofrisinginequalityandstagnantwages.Intoomanytroubledneighborhoodsacrossthecountry,theconditionsofourpoorestcitizensappearlittlechangedfromwhatexisted50yearsago-?
neighborhoodswithunderfundedschoolsandbroken-downslums,inadequatehealthcare,constantviolence,neighborhoodsinwhichtoomanyyoungpeoplegrowupwithlittlehopeandfewprospectsforthefuture.
Ourworkisnotdone.Andsoonthisday,inwhichwecelebrateamanandamovementthatdidsomuchforthiscountry,letusdrawstrengthfromthoseearlierstruggles.Firstandforemost,letusrememberthatchangehasneverbeenquick.Changehasneverbeensimple,orwithoutcontroversy.Changedependsonpersistence.Changerequiresdetermination.IttookafulldecadebeforethemoralguidanceofBrownv.BoardofEducationwastranslatedintotheenforcementmeasuresoftheCivilRightsActandtheVotingRightsAct,butthose10longyearsdidnotleadDr.Kingtogiveup.Hekeptonpushing,hekeptonspeaking,hekeptonmarchinguntilchangefinallycame.(Applause.)
Andthenwhen,evenaftertheCivilRightsActandtheVotingRightsActpassed,AfricanAmericansstillfoundthemselvestrappedinpocketsofpovertyacrossthecountry,Dr.Kingdidn’tsaythoselawswereafailure;hedidn’tsaythisistoohard;hedidn’tsay,let’ssettleforwhatwegotandgohome.Insteadhesaid,let’stakethosevictoriesandbroadenourmissiontoachievenotjustcivilandpoliticalequalitybutalsoeconomicjustice;let’sfightforalivingwageandbetterschoolsandjobsforallwhoarewillingtowork.Inotherwords,whenmetwithhardship,whenconfrontingdisappointment,Dr.Kingrefusedtoacceptwhathecalledthe“isness”oftoday.Hekeptpushingtowardsthe“oughtness”oftomorrow.
Andso,aswethinkaboutalltheworkthatwemustdo?
-rebuildinganeconomythatcancompeteonaglobalstage,andfixingourschoolssothateverychild--notjustsome,buteverychild--getsaworld-classeducation,andmakingsurethatourhealthcaresystemisaffordableandaccessibletoall,andthatoureconomicsystemisoneinwhicheverybodygetsafairshakeandeverybodydoestheirfairshare,letusnotbetrappedbywhatis.(Applause.)Wecan’tbediscouragedbywhatis.We’vegottokeeppushingforwhatoughttobe,theAmericaweoughttoleavetoourchildren,mindfulthatthehardshipswefacearenothingcomparedtothoseDr.Kingandhisfellowmarchersfaced50yearsago,andthatifwemaintainourfaith,inourselvesandinthepossibilitiesofthisnation,thereisnochallengewecannotsurmount.
AndjustaswedrawstrengthfromDr.King’sstruggles,somustwedrawinspirationfromhisconstantinsistenceontheonenessofman;thebeliefinhiswordsthat“wearecaughtinaninescapablenetworkofmutuality,tiedinasinglegarmentofdestiny.”Itwasthatinsistence,rootedinhisChristianfaith,thatledhimtotellagroupofangryyoungprotesters,“IloveyouasIlovemyownchildren,”evenasonethrewarockthatglancedoffhisneck.
Itwasthatinsistence,thatbeliefthatGodresidesineachofus,fromthehightothelow,intheoppressorandtheoppressed,thatconvincedhimthatpeopleandsystemscouldchange.Itfortifiedhisbeliefinnon-violence.Itpermittedhimtoplacehisfaithinagovernmentthathadfallenshortofitsideals.ItledhimtoseehischargenotonlyasfreeingblackAmericafromtheshacklesofdiscrimination,butalsofreeingmanyAmericansfromtheirownprejudices,andfreeingAmericansofeverycolorfromthedepredationsofpoverty.
Andsoatthismoment,whenourpoliticsappearsosharplypolarized,andfaithinourinstitutionssogreatlydiminished,weneedmorethanevertotakeheedofDr.King’steachings.Hecallsonustostandintheotherperson’sshoes;toseethroughtheireyes;tounderstandtheirpain.Hetellsusthatwehaveadutytofightagainstpoverty,evenifwearewelloff;tocareaboutthechildinthedecrepitschoolevenifourownchildrenaredoingfine;toshowcompassiontowardtheimmigrantfamily,withtheknowledgethatmostofusareonlyafewgenerationsremovedfromsimilarhardships.(Applause.)
Tosaythatweareboundtogetherasonepeople,andmustconstantlystrivetoseeourselvesinoneanother,isnottoargueforafalseunitythatpapersoverourdifferencesandratifiesanunjuststatusquo.Aswastrue50yearsago,ashasbeentruethrough
