Insomeschools,ifadogissuitedfortrainingbutnotquiteready,itmaygobacktothepuppy(幼犬)raiserforamonthorsotomature.Ifadogissimplynotsuitedfortraining,theschoolwillworktoplacethedoginanotherlineofwork,suchastracking,orfinditapermanenthome,usuallyofferingittothepuppyraiserfirst.AtGuidingEyesfortheBlind,onlythetop50percentofthepuppieswillstaywiththeschool.Sotheschoolplacesalittleover400puppieswithraiserseachyear,needingonly200dogsforthetrainingprogram.Ofthat200,asmallpercentagewillbecomebreedingstock,forGuidingEyesoranotherschool,andtherestwillbeconsideredforthetrainingprogram.
Trainingisarigorousprocessforboththeinstructorsandthedogs,butit’salsoalotoffun.Tomakesurethedogsareuptothechallenge,mostschoolstestthemextensivelybeforebeginningthetraining.Thetestsaredesignedtoassessthedogs’self-confidencelevel,sinceonlyextremelyconfidentdogswillbeabletodealwiththepressureofguidinginstruction.Ifadogpassesthetests,itbeginsthetrainingprogramrightaway.
