ItwasaSundayandtheheavystormhadlastedallnight.Themorningafterthestorm,though,wasbeautiful:
blueskies,warmairandacalm,invitingseatouchingtheshoregently.
Myfatherrealiseditwasagooddayforfishingandinvitedmysisterandmetogowithhim.Iwasonly14andfishinghadneverbeenmything,butIdecidedtogoallthesame.I'm_so_glad_I_did.
Ontheroadtotheharbourwecouldseetheterribledestructiononthecoast,buttheharbouritselfwasinfairlygoodshape.Afterall,itwasprotectedbythearmsofabaythathadonlyonetinychanneltothesea.Aswegotonboard,wenoticedtwobighumps(脊背)inthedistance.

Thelittlebabywhale—actuallyasbigasourboat—wasobviouslystuckandcouldnotmove.Themotherdivedunderthewaterandcameupsuddenly,makingbigwhirlpools(漩涡)andwaves.“She'stryingtohelpherbaby,butonthewrongside,”myfathersaid.Atthispoint,myfathermovedourboatinasemicircletotheothersideand,headingtheboattowardsthebabywhale,pusheditgently.Withourseveralgentlepushesthebighumpturnedoveranddisappearedunderwater.Thenitswamuprightbesideitsmum.Theystruggledintheirdesperateattemptstoescapebutmissedtheexitandstartedheadinginthewrongdirection.Wehurrieduptothewhalesandtriedtoleadthemtowardsthebaychannel.Slowly,theyletusleadthem,sometimesrisingfromthewaterrightbesideustobreathe—andtogiveusatrustinglookwiththosehugeeyes.Oncetheyhittheirfirstpartofcleanwaterflowingstraightfromthesea,themumgaveusawavewithhertailandtheyswamintothedistance.
