BACKGROUND
Thepresentinventionrelatesgenerallytopassengerservicesystemsusedinaircraft,andmoreparticularly,toanaircraftaudioandvideointercomsystemforuseinservingpassengersofanaircraft.
Currentin-flightaircraftpassengerservicesystemsoperatesuchthatapassengerpressesaservicecallbuttonathisorherseattocallaflightattendant,andachimeorlightisactivatedinthegalleyoftheaircrafttoalerttheflightattendant.Typicallyconventionalsystemssoundachimeinthegalleywhenapassengerrequiresaservice.Theflightattendantmustthengotothepassenger'sseattoreceivetherequestfromthepassenger.Theflightattendantthenreturnstothegalleytogetthedesireditemandthendeliversittothepassengertofilltherequest.Consequently,theflightattendantmustmaketwotripstothepassenger'sseatfillarequest,onetoreceivetherequestandthesecondtofillit.
Theassigneeofthepresentinventiondesignsandmanufacturesaircraftentertainmentsystems.Theinventorshavedeterminedthatseveraloftheaircraftentertainmentsystemsmaybemodifiedtopermitaudiocommunicationbetweenaflightattendantandpassengersalongwithprovidingavideoimageoftheflightattendanttothepassengerswhenplacingservicerequests.
Accordingly,itisanobjectiveofthepresentinventiontoprovideforanaircraftaudioandvideointercomsystemforuseinservingpassengersofanaircraft.
SUMMARYOFTHEINVENTION
Tomeettheaboveandotherobjectives,thepresentinventionprovidesforanaircraftaudioandvideointercomsystemthatallowsflightattendantsandairlinepassengerstocommunicatetoeachotheroveranaircrafttelephonesystem,andallowsthepassengertoviewtheflightattendantatthesametimebywayofadisplaylocatedatthepassenger'sseat.Theflightattendantreceivespassengerservicerequestsandcommunicatesbywayofaflightattendantcontrolunitandhandsetintheservicegalley.Passengerscommunicatebywayofpassengercontrolunitandhandsetslocatedateachseat.Acameramountedinthegalleyallowspassengerstoviewtheflightattendantwhilemakingtheservicerequest.
Theaircraftaudioandvideointercomsystemsavesaflightattendantonetriptoaseattoreceiveeachservicerequest.Usingthepresentaircraftaudioandvideointercomsystem,theflightattendantcanreceivetherequestinthegalleyandimmediatelydelivertheitemtothepassenger.Thisfeaturebenefitsthepassengerinprovidingfasterserviceandresponsetimeandtheflightattendantreducesnecessarytimeingoingtoseatstoreceiveservicerequests.
Theaircraftvideointercomsystemmaybeimplementedusinganyin-flightdistributedaudioandvideosystemthatsupportsseat-to-seattelephonecommunications.Theaircraftaudioandvideointercomsystemmayalsobeusedinanytravelenvironmentthatalsodeliversin-seatpassengerservices.
BRIEFDESCRIPTIONOFTHEDRAWINGS
Thevariousfeaturesandadvantagesofthepresentinventionmaybemorereadilyunderstoodwithreferencetothefollowingdetaileddescriptiontakeninconjunctionwiththeaccompanyingdrawingwhichillustratesanaircraftaudioandvideointercomsysteminaccordancewiththeprinciplesofthepresentinventionforuseonanaircraft.
DETAILEDDESCRIPTION
ReferringtothedrawingFIGURE,itillustratesoneimplementationofanaudioandvideointercomsystem10inaccordancewiththeprinciplesofthepresentinventionforuseinanaircraft20.IntheembodimentshowninthedrawingFIGURE,theaircraftaudioandvideointercomsystem10isimplementedusingcomponentsofanAPAX-150distributedaudioandvideosystem30manufacturedbyHughes-AvicomInternational.However,itistobeunderstoodthatotheraircraftaudioandvideodistributionsystemsmayalsobeadaptedtoimplementtheprinciplesofthepresentinvention.
Theaircraftaudioandvideointercomsystem10permitsaudibleandvisualcommunicationbetweenaflightattendant11locatedinagalley21oftheaircraft20,andpassengers12locatedatseats13oftheaircraft20.Acamera14andanattendantcontrolunitandhandset15aredisposedinthegalley21inanappropriatelocationfortheflightattendant11toutilizethem.Aprimaryaccessterminal40isalsoprovidedthatisusedtoconfigurethedistributedaudioandvideosystem30sothatvideoimagesfromthecamera14areroutedtotheappropriateseat13.
IntheembodimentshowninthedrawingFIGURE,thecamera14andhandset15areinterfacedtocomponentsofthedistributedaudioandvideosystem30.Thecamera14iscoupledtoamodulator31thatmodulatesthevideooutputsignalsfromthecamera14alongwithvideooutputsignalsofothersources,suchaslaserdisksorvideotapedecks,forexample.Themodulator31producesmodulatedRFvideosignalscontainingsignalsfromeachofthesources.ThemodulatedvideoRFsignalsaremodulatedatafrequencyinthe50MHzrange.
ThemodulatedvideoRFsignalsarecoupledtoavideoprocessor32.Audiosignalsfromothersources,suchascompactdisksandaudiotapedecks,andthelike,arealsocoupledtothevideoprocessor32.Thevideoprocessor32combinesthemodulatedvideoRFsignalswiththeaudiosignalsfromtheothersourcesandoutputscombinedmodulatedRFsignals.Adescriptionofthevideoprocessor32maybefoundinU.S.Pat.No.5,289,272entitled"CombinedData,AudioandVideoDistributionSysteminPassengerAircraft",whichisassignedtotheassigneeofthepresentinvention.ThecontentsofU.S.Pat.No.5,289,272areincorporatedhereinbyreferenceinitsentirety.Thevideoprocessor32isemployedintheAPAX-150distributedaudioandvideosystem30previouslydevelopedbytheassigneeofthepresentinvention.
Theoutputofthevideoprocessor32iscoupledtoanaudioandtelephoneprocessor33,whichhassubstantiallythesamearchitectureasthevideoprocessor32,butwhichcontainsdifferentoperatingsoftware,andwhichprocessesvideo,audioandtelephonesignals.Atelephoneswitch34iscoupledtotheaudioandtelephoneprocessor33andisusedtoprocesstelephonecallstoandfromexternalsources(whichisnotpartofthepresentinvention),althoughpassengercontrolunitandhandsets39locatedateachseat13thatareusedinthepresentinventionarealsousedtoplacepersonaltelephonecallsfromtheaircraft.Thetelephoneswitch34isusedtoroutetelephonecallsbetweenvariousbearersystem(e.g.,satelliteorradiolinks)andthepassengercontrolunitandhandsets39operatedbythepassengers12.
Theaudioandtelephoneprocessor33iscoupledtoadrivercircuit35foreachcolumnofseats.Thedrivercircuit35couplesthevideoandaudiosignalstoeachoftheseatelectronicscircuits36ineachcolumnitcontrols.Theaudioprocessor32providesaninterfacebetweenthetelephoneswitch34andthedrivercircuit35,androutesthecombinedmodulatedRFsignalstothecolumndrivercircuit35.
Oneseatelectronicscircuit36islocatedateachpassenger'sseat13andiscoupledtoaseatdisplayunit38andtoapassengercontrolunitandhandset39.Thepassengercontrolunitandhandset39issubstantiallythesameastheattendantcontrolunitandhandset15.Theseatelectronicscircuits36maybeusedtocontroloneormoreseatdisplay38andpassengercontrolunitandhandsets39.Thepassengerusesthepassengercontrolunitandhandset39toinitiateaservicecalltotheflightattendant11andtocommunicatewiththeflightattendant11.Theseatdisplay38isusedbythepassengertoviewtheflightattendant11whenmakingtheservicerequest.Theseatdisplay38isalsousedbythepassengertoviewvideomoviesortelevisionprogrammingaspartofthenormaloperationofthedistributedaudioandvideosystem30.
Thepluralityofseatelectronicscircuits36inacolumnofseatsarecontrolledbyasingledrivercircuit35.Theseatelectronicscircuits36couplevideoandaudiosignalsfromthevariousvideoandaudiosources(satelliteTVprogramming,laserdisk,videotape)toeachseatdisplay38intherespectivecolumn.Thevideosignalsaredisplayedontheseatdisplay38andtheaudiosignalsfromthesatelliteTVprogramming,laserdisk,videotape,compactdiskoraudiotapeareoutputbywayofaspeakerofthepassengercontrolunitandhandset39,forexample.
Theprimaryaccessterminal40iscoupledtotheaudioandtelephoneprocessor33andisusedtoprogramroutingofaudio,videoandtelephonesignalstoandfromtherespectivepassengerseats13.Theprimaryaccessterminal40configureseachoftheseatelectronicscircuits36locatedateachpassenger'sseat13topermitdisplayofpayperviewprograms,placingoftelephonecalls,andaccesstoothercommunicationorentertainmentservices.Forthepurposesofthepresentinvention,theprimaryaccessterminal40isusedtopreprogramapredeterminedvideochannelthatisusedtocouplethevideosignalsfromthecamera14toeachoftheseatelectronicscircuits36locatedattheseat13.Theprimaryaccessterminal40mayalsobeusedtopreprogramthepredeterminedvideochannelforusebyselectedpassengersthatpayfortheaudioandvideointercomservicesprovidedbythepresentinvention.Theprogrammingofthevideochannelandtheseatelectronicscircuits36isdonebyaircraftpersonnelforotherservices,andiseasilydonetoimplementthepresentinvention.
Eachoftheseatelectronicscircuits36iscoupledtotheprimaryaccessterminal40sothattheprimaryaccessterminal40canconfiguretheseatelectronicscircuits36andthepassengercontrolunitandhandsets39.Theprimaryaccessterminal40controlstheaudioandtelephoneprocess
