Initially,muchdependsonhowpeoplemeet,andonfavourablefirstimpressions.Aswegettoknowpeople,wetakeintoaccountthingslikeage,race,physicalattractivenesseconomicandsocialstatus,andintelligence.Althoughthesefactorsarenotofprimeimportance,itismoredifficulttorelatetopeoplewhenthereisamarkeddifferenceinageandbackground.
Onamoreimmediatelevel,wearesensitivetoactualbehaviour,facialexpression,andtoneofvoice.Friendswillstandclosertogetherandwillspendmoretimelookingateachotherthanmereacquaintances.Smilesandsoftvoicesalsoexpressfriendliness,anditisbecausetheymaytransmitthewrongsignalsthatshypeopleoftenhavedifficultyinmakingfriends.Afriendlygazewiththewrongfacialexpressioncanturnintoanaggressivestare,andnervousnessmaybemisreadashostility.Peoplewhodonotlookoneintheeyearemistrustedwhen,infact,theysimplylackconfidence.
Somerelationshipsthriveonargumentanddiscussion,butitisusualforclosefriendstohavesimilarideasandbeliefs,tohaveattitudesandinterestsincommon-theyoftentalkabout"beingonthesamewavelength".Itgenerallytakestimetoreachthispoint;sometimespeople"click"immediately.Themoreintimatelyinvolvedpeoplebecome,themoretheyrelyononeanother.Peoplewanttodofriendsfavoursandhatetoletthemdown.Equally,friendshavetolearntomakeallowancesforeachother,toputupwithirritatinghabits,andtotoleratedifferencesofopinion.Imaginegoingcampingwithsomeoneyouoccasionallymeetforadrink!
Incontrastwithmarriage,therearenofriendshipceremonies,noritualstostrengthentheassociationbetweentwopeople.Butthemutualsupportandunderstandingthatresultsfromsharedexperiencesandemotionsdoesseemtocreateapowerfulbond,whichcanovercomedifferencesinbackground,andbreakdownbarriersofage,classorrace.
