Renaultisnotaloneinthinkingthatvirtualrealitywilltransformautomotivede-sign.InDetroit,Fordisalsoinvestigatingitspotential.JackTelnac,thefirm'sbeadofdesign,wouldlikedesignersindifferentpartsoftheworldtoworkmorecloselytogether,linkedbycomputers.Theywoulddomorethanstylecares.Virtualrealitywillallowengineerstopeerinsidetheworkingpartsofavehicle.Designerswillwatchbearingsmove,oilflow,gearsmeshandhydraulicspump.Asthesetechniquescatchon,evenstrangervehiclesarelikelytocomealong.
Transformingthesecreationsfromvirtualrealitytoactualrealitywillalsobecomeeasier,especiallywithadvancesinmaterials.Firmsthatoncebashedeverythingoutofsteelnowfindthatnewalloysofcompositematerials(whichcanbemadefrommixturesofplastic,resin,ceramicsandmetals,reinforcedwithfiberssuchasglassofcarbon)arechangingtherulesofmanufacturing.Atthesametime,oldmaterialskeepgettingbetter,astheirproducerstrytosecuretheirplaceinthefactoryofthefuture.Thiscompetitionisincreasingthepaceofdevelopmentofallmaterials.
