“Noonecantakeone-sidedaction,”saysLaird,whoisexploringwhethertoseekanexemption(豁免)fromfederalanti—trustlawssomembercollegescandiscusshowtheycouldjointlyreducemeritaid,“Thisisamerry-go-roundthat'sgoingveryfast,andnoneoftheinstitutionsbelievetheycansustaintherisksoftryingtobreakawaybythemselves。

Acomplicatingfactoristhatmeritaidhasbecomesopopularwithmiddle—incomefamilies,whodon'tqualifyforneed—basedaid,thatmanyhavecometodependonit。
And,astuitionscontinuetoincrease,thelinebetweenmeritandneedblurs.

“Westillbelieveinrewardingsuperiorachievementsandknowthatthesetopstudentstrulyvaluethescholarship,"saysScottFriedhoff,Allegheny'svicepresidentforenrollment.
