Toimprovetheunderstandingoftheimpactofnuclearweaponsunderbattlefieldconditions,werequiremoreaccurate,efficient,userfriendlymethodsofcalculatinganddisplayingtheaffectsonuclearscenariosandtheiroperationalimpact.Areasofinterestinclude:
improvedaccuracyevenascalculationaltimesareminimized:
relianceonbasicphysicalprinciplesvalidatedbymeasuredtestresults:
fasterrunningcalculations;andnewimprovedwaystoenableusers(betheyadvancednuclearweaponseffectsresearchers,weaponsystemsdevelopers,ormanagerswithlimitednuclearweaponseffectsexperience)tocalculate,estimate,andappreciatenuclearweaponeffectsandtheirsystemimpacts.Nuclearweaponeffectsincludeairblast,groundshock;watershock;cratering;thermalradiation;neutron,gammaandxrayradiation;electromagneticpulse;fallout;blueout;blackout;redout;anddustcloudformation.
Improvedmethodsarerequiredforthemanagementoftechnicalinformationthatrelatestoarchivalofnuclearweaponphenomenologyandtestdataaswellasinputtoandretrievalofsuchdataarchives.Methodsfordevelopingunifyingtestdatastandardsdevisedwithapplicationbeyondjustnucleartesteffectsareneededtoimprovedataprocessingefficiencyandreducedhardwareandsoftwarespecificrequirements.

Theresearchwilldemonstratethefeasibilityoftheproposedapproachtoimprovetheunderstandingofnuclearweaponeffectsorthearchivalandease
ofuseofstoreddata.
PHASEII:
TheresearchconceptsdevelopedinPhaseIwillbefurtherdevelopedandincorporatedintoappropriatecodes.

TheDefenseSpecialWeaponsAgency(DSWA)isinterestedinthebasicphysicalprocesseswhichdescribetheinteractionofnuclearweaponswiththeatmosphere,whichcreateenvironmentsthatdegraethepropagationofcommunicationandradarsignalsandthatcontaihnopticalclutterbackgroundswhichdegradeopticalsensorsystems.PartofDSWA'smissionistosimualteeffectsonanddeterminemitigationmethodsforDoDsystemssuchassatellitecommunications,VLF/LFcomunications,HF/VHF/UHFcommunications,radarsystems,andopticalsensorsystems.AreasofinterestincludethedevelopmentofimprovedcommunicationsandsensormethodstomitigateatmosphericeffecfgsonsystemsandthedevelopmentofanapplicatiohnofsimulatorstotestDoDsystemsinstressedenvironments.
