Today,SpecialOlympicsstandasaleaderinthefieldofintellectualdisability.Itisatrulyglobalmovement,withmorethan500,000athletesinChina,morethan210,000inIndia,almost550,000intheUnitedStates,morethan600inAfghanistanand4,400athletesinRwanda.SpecialOlympicsWorldGameswereheldinIrelandin2003,inJapanin2005andinChinain2007.Mostimportantly,SpecialOlympicssharpenedthefocusonitsmissionasnotjust“nice”,butcritical,notjustasasportsorganizationforpeoplewithintellectualdisabilities,butalsoasaneffectivemeansforsocialchange.
