Abstract
AcomputationalstrategyisdevelopedtocharacterizethedrivingforceforfatiguecracknucleationatsubsurfaceprimaryinclusionsincarburizedandshotpeenedC61®martensiticgearsteels.Experimentalinvestigationrevealedminimumfatiguestrengthtobecontrolledbysubsurfacefatiguecracknucleationatinclusionclustersundercyclicbending.Analgorithmispresentedtosimulateresidualstressdistributioninducedthroughtheshotpeeningprocessfollowingcarburizationandtempering.Amethodologyisdevelopedtoanalyzepotencyoffatiguecracknucleationatsubsurfaceinclusions.Rate-independent3Dfiniteelementanalysesareperformedtoevaluateplasticdeformationduringprocessingandservice.ThespecimenissubjectedtoreversedbendingstresscycleswithR = 0.05,representativeofloadingonageartooth.Thematrixismodeledasanelastic–plasticmaterialwithpurenonlinearkinematichardening.Theinclusionsaremodeledasisotropic,linearelastic.Idealizedinclusiongeometries(ellipsoidal)areconsideredtostudythefatiguecracknucleationpotencyatvarioussubsurfacedepths.Threedistincttypesofsecond-phaseparticles(perfectlybonded,partiallydebonded,andcracked)areanalyzed.Parametricstudiesquantifytheeffectsofinclusionsize,orientationandclusteringonsubsurfacecracknucleationinthehighcyclefatigue(HCF)orveryhighcyclefatigue(VHCF)regimes.ThenonlocalaveragevaluesofmaximumplasticshearstrainamplitudeandFatemi–Socie(FS)parametercalculatedintheproximityoftheinclusionsareconsideredastheprimarydrivingforceparametersforfatiguecracknucleationandmicrostructurallysmallcrackgrowth.Thesimulationsindicateastrongpropensityforcracknucleationatsubsurfacedepthsinagreementwithexperimentsinwhichfatiguecracksnucleatedatinclusionclusters,stillinthecompressiveresidualstressfield.Itisobservedthatthegradientfromthesurfaceofresidualstressdistribution,bendingstress,andcarburizedmaterialpropertiesplayapivotalroleinfatiguecracknucleationandsmallcrackgrowthatsubsurfaceprimaryinclusions.Thefatiguepotencyofinclusionclustersisgreatlyincreasedbypriorinterfacialdamageduringprocessing.

InParkinson'sdisease,togetherwiththeclassiclossofdopamineneuronsofthesubstantianigraparscompacta,neuropathologicalstudiesandbiochemicalfindingsdocumentedtheoccurrenceofaconcomitantsignificantcelldeathinthelocuscoeruleus.Thisreviewanalyzesthelatestdataobtainedfromexperimentalparkinsonismindicatingthat,thelossofnorepinephrineinParkinson'sdiseasemightworsenthedopaminenigrostriataldamage.Withinthislattercontext,basicresearchprovidedanewprovocativehypothesisonthesignificanceoflocuscoeruleusinconditioningthenaturalhistoryofParkinson'sdisease.Inparticular,thelossofatrophicinfluenceoftheseneuronsmightbecrucialinincreasingthesensitivityofnigrostriataldopamineaxonstovariousneurotoxicinsults.Inlinewiththis,recently,ithasbeenshownthatlocuscoeruleusactivityplaysapivotalroleintheexpressionofvariousimmediateearlygenesandininducingthephosphorilationofcyclicadenosinemonophosphateresponseelement-bindingproteins,suggestingaroleofthenucleusinsustainingaprotectiveeffect.

Abstract
Thispaperpresentsanintegratedvirtualrealitygeographicinformationsystem(VRGIS)basedoncomputationalstereo.Inthissystem,three-dimensional(3D)and360°panoramicscenesarereconstructedfrommultiplestereoimagepairsacquiredwithamobilestereomachinevisionsystem.ThespatialcoordinatesofpanoramicscenesareregisteredtoelectronicmapstoobtainarealscaleVRGISthatiscapableofefficientretrievalofspatialinformationandallowsfornavigationinvirtualreality.Asoftwareprogramwasimplementedforimageprocessing,coordinatetransformation,3Dsurfacemodelbuilding,datafusion,digitalmapping,anddatabasemanagementfortheVRGIS.Insettingup3Dmodelsforthevirtualrealityenvironment,wefocusedoncomparisonsofpatternmatchingalgorithmsforcreatingdisparityimagesfromstereopairs,andadoptedthegraphcutmethodandthenon-parametriclocaltransformmethodinoursystem.Followingthecomputationofdisparityimages,theyaretransformedintocylindricalcoordinatesandstitchedintoa3Dand360°panoramicscene.Inordertoallowforvirtualrealitynavigation,thepanoramicsceneisfurthercastinto3Dtriangularsurfacemodelforfasttexturemappingusingmemorylesssimplificationalgorithm.Theeffectsofreducingthenumberofedgesina3Dsurfacemodeloncomputationtimeanddiscrepancyfrom3Dsurfacemodelwithnoedgereductionwerealsoanalyzed.Experimentalresultsshowthatthediscrepancywasabout13%when80%edgereductionwasappliedtocreatetheapproximate3Dsurfacemodel.Thisindicatesasignificantcomputationalandmemoryreductionwhilethecomputergraphicdisplayofthescenemodelwasstillvisuallysatisfactory.Finally,multiple3Dsceneswereintegratedintoasiteontheelectronicmappermittingtheusertonavigatethroughlocationtolocationinavirtualrealityenvironment.Thedevelopedsystemmayserveasaversatileplatforminestablishingfieldinformationformanyapplicationssuchasprecisionagriculture,vehicleautomation,geographicvisualization,archaeologysitemodelling,etc.
