ASDisanervedevelopmentaldisordercharacterizedbydamageinsocial-communicationskills andrestrictedandrepetitivebehaviors.WhilemanysignsofASDarepresentbeforeagetwo,the majorityofchildrenwithASDarenotdiagnoseduntilafteragefour,whichmeansthatcorrective treatmentsarestartedlater,delayingtheirpotentialimpact.
OneofthechallengestoearlierdetectionofASDistofindwaystoidentifychildrenatriskfor
thedisordersoonerandinchildrenwithspeechdelays.Someofthe earliestandcontinuoussigns of ASDinvolveauditory (听觉) communication,however,mosttestsrelyonspeech, andare often ineffectiveinsmallchildrenwhohavecommunicationdelays.
Inthenewstudy,researchersusedatechniquethatmeasureswhatarecalledotoacoustic
emissions(耳声发射).Thetestissimilartothescreeningthatmanynewbornsmustundergobefore leavingthehospitaltocheckforhearingproblems.Usingmicrophoneearplugs,theresearchers wereabletomeasurehearingdeficienciesbylisteningforsignsthattheearishavingtrouble processingsounds.Specifically,themicrophonecandetectminutesoundemissionmadebyinner earouterhaircellsinresponsetoevenclickingsounds.Ifthesecellsarenotfunctioningproperly, thedevicefailstodetectanemission,indicatingthatinnerearfunctionisdamaged.
Theresearcherstestedthehearingofchildrenbetween6and17, roughlyhalfofthose
