WhenJaniceBarnwelldecidedtoboosthercareerbyobtainingamaster’sdegreeinbusiness,theworkingmotherchoseanonlineuniversitybecauseoftheconvenienceandthelowcost.
The44-year-old’seducationalexperienceexceededherexpectations,andhernewemployerpaidforhertotakefourmorecoursesonlinetosharpenherskills.

Theonlineeducationsectorgrew13percentlastyearandhadbeengrowingatabout20percentinpreviousyears.Nearlyoneinfourstudentstakeatleastsomecollegecoursesonline,upfromonein10in2002.Twomillionstudents,olderthanthetraditional18-22year-oldundergraduates,takealltheircoursesonlineandtwomillionmoretakeoneormoreonlinecourse.
PresidentBarackObamapledged$500millionforonlinecoursesandmaterialsaspartofamulti-prongedplanaimedatexpandingaccesstocollege.
Twenty-ninepercentofU.S.adultshaveacollegedegree,fewerthaninmanyotherindustrializednations.Onlyabout40percentofAmericanswhostartcollegegraduate.Thepriceofhighereducation,whichrisesbyanaverageof8percentayear,contributestothehighdropoutrate.
“Allalongthateducationpipeline,toomanypeopleareslippingthroughthecracks.It’snotonlyheartbreakingforthosestudents;it’salossforoureconomyandourcountry,”Obamasaidinarecentspeech.
JeffConlon,chiefexecutiveofKaplanHigherEducationwithsome59,000onlinestudents,saidtraditionalcollegescouldnotmeetObama’sgoalsforhighereducation.
“Obamawantstomakeusfirstagainby2020,”hesaid.
“Inordertodothat,weneedtocreate63millioncollegegraduatesoverthatperiod.Thehighereducationsystemasconstructedwillcomeup16milliondegreesshort.There’snotcapacityinthesystem.”
ProponentsofonlineeducationcitearecentDepartmentofEducationstudythatconcludedcourseworkisbetterabsorbedonlinethanmaterialpresentedinliveclassrooms.
Amongtheheavilymarketedfor-profitonlineeducators,theleaderistheUniversityofPhoenix,aunitofApolloGroupInc,whoseenrollmentrose22percentto420,700studentsinthequarterendingMay31,withrevenuesrising26percent.
BothKaplan,aunitof WashingtonPostCo,andPhoenixareaccredited(公认的,可信任的)universities.Employersincreasinglyseedegreesearnedonlineasequaltothosereceivedfrombrick-and-mortar(有教学场所的)schools,expertssay.Somemanagersbelievestudentswhoearndegreesonlinewhilealsoholdingajobarelikelytoexhibitmoreself-disciplineanddetermination.

MostKaplanclassesarecappedat25studentsbecausefacultycanbesubjectedtocommunicationoverload.Studentswhomighthavebeenintimidatedtospeakupinclassroomsoftenfindtheirvoiceonline.
Professors,mostwith doctorates,arehiredfortheirteachingabilityandnotfortheirresearch,Conlonsaid.
ThecostatKaplanforafour-yearcollegedegreeisaround$65,000,comparedtoupto$150,000ormoreataprivatecollege.OnlinelibraryaccessisprovidedbytheUniversityofAlabamainHuntsville.
Bystudyingonline,BarnwellsavedonthetimeandtraveltotheuniversitynearestherNewJerseyhome.Onlinetuitionwaslessthan$30,000,one-thirdthecostoftheuniversity.
Roughlyhalfofthe4,500U.S.brick-and-mortarcollegesand universitiesnowhaveonlineprograms.Somehaveprovensopopularthatschoolshavehadtorestrictenrollmentbyon-campusstudentsbecausetheyweretakingslots(位置)awayfromoff-campusstudents,saidJeffSeaman,wholedasurveyonthetopicfortheSloanConsortium.
Onlineeducationisalsomaking inroads(入侵)inschools,withonemillionU.S.elementaryandhighschoolstudents,orsome4percentofthetotal,learningonline.
Sometakeremedialor advancedplacementcoursesnotavailableattheirschools,andsomearebeinghome-schooledorliveinisolatedruralareas.
“You’reabletolearnatyourownpaceandyoualsocanhavehelpwheneveryouneeditfromtheteacher,”saidChristopher Cox,12,achildactorinColumbia,Maryland.
HarvardBusinessSchoolProfessorClayton Christensenpredictedhalfofkindergartenthroughhighschoolstudentswillattendschoolonlinewithinthenextdecade.
