Abookreviewisadescription,criticalanalysis,andanevaluationonthequality,meaning,andsignificanceofabook,notaretelling.Itshouldfocusonthebook'spurpose,content,andauthority.Acriticalbookreviewisnotabookreportorasummary.Itisareactionpaperinwhichstrengthsandweaknessesofthematerialareanalyzed.Itshouldincludeastatementofwhattheauthorhastriedtodo,evaluateshowwell(intheopinionofthereviewer)theauthorhassucceeded,andpresentsevidencetosupportthisevaluation.
Thereisnorightwaytowriteabookreview.Bookreviewsarehighlypersonalandreflecttheopinionsofthereviewer.Areviewcanbeasshortas50-100words,oraslongas1500words,dependingonthepurposeofthereview.
Thefollowingarestandardproceduresforwritingbookreviews;theyaresuggestions,notformulaethatmustbeused.
1.Writeastatementgivingessentialinformationaboutthebook:
title,author,firstcopyrightdate,typeofbook,generalsubjectmatter,specialfeatures(maps,colorplates,etc.),priceandISBN.
2.Statetheauthor’spurposeinwritingthebook.Sometimesauthorsstatetheirpurposeintheprefaceorthefirstchapter.Whentheydonot,youmayarriveatanunderstandingofthebook’spurposebyaskingyourselfthesequestions:
a.Whydidtheauthorwriteonthissubjectratherthanonsomeothersubject?
b.Fromwhatpointofviewistheworkwritten?
c.Wastheauthortryingtogiveinformation,toexplainsomethingtechnical,toconvincethereaderofabelief’svaliditybydramatizingitinaction?
d.Whatisthegeneralfieldorgenre,andhowdoesthebookfitintoit?

3.Statethethemeandthethesisofthebook.
a.Theme:
Thethemeisthesubjectortopic.Itisnotnecessarilythetitle,anditisusuallynotexpressedinacompletesentence.Itexpressesaspecificphaseofthegeneralsubjectmatter.
b.Thesis:
Thethesisisanauthor’sgeneralizationaboutthetheme,theauthor’sbeliefsaboutsomethingimportant,thebook’sphilosophicalconclusion,orthepropositiontheauthormeanstoprove.Expressitwithoutmetaphororotherfigurativelanguage,inonedeclarativesentence.
