In1950,GwendolynBrooksbecamethefirstAfricanAmericantowinthePulitzerPrizeforPoetry.ShewontheprizeforhersecondbookofpoemscalledAnnieAllen.AnnieAllenisacollectionofpoetryaboutthelifeofaBronzevillegirlasadaughter,awifeandmother.Sheexperiencesloneliness,loss,deathandbeingpoor.Ms.Brookssaidthatwinningtheprizechangedherlife.
Hernextworkwasanovelwrittenin1953calledMaudMartha,MaudMarthareceivedlittlenoticewhenitwasfirstpublished.Butnowitisconsideredanimportantworkbysomecritics.Itsmainideasaboutthedifficultlifeofmanywomenarepopularamongfemalewriterstoday.
