Abstract
JaneEyreisapieceofautobiographicalfiction,whichisBritishwomannovelistCharlotteBronte’sfirstnovelpublishedin1849.Creatingafemaleimagewhoisagainstsocialpressurewithrebellionandindependence.Thenovelisfilledwithlove,passionandreason,andmaintainsitsuniqueartisticcharm.Thisthesisanalyzessomemajorcharactersinthenovelandtakesalotofexamplestoshowtheauthor’sintentionandreflectthelovetheme.Bringingcharactertolifealsosuggeststheauthor’sresistantspirit.TheheroineofJaneEyre,aplainandlittlegirl,livesundertraditionalpressuretopursueindependenceandloveloyalty.Thisthesisaimsathersenseoflove.Underherrebellionandself-respect,sheliterallyhasgotafieryheartforherlove.

Introduction
ThisthesisdiscussesthelovevalueofJaneEyre.JaneEyreisCharlotte’sbestliteraryproduction.Inwritingit,theauthordrewagreatdealfromherownlife-experience.Thenovelshowsusanewwomanon19thcenturyinEngland.
JaneEyreisonewithalonghistoryofliteraryworks.Ithasahistoryof152years,itsuccessfullyportraysawomenimagewhoisdaretostruggle,tofightforfreedomandequalityofstatusofthesociety.ItisCharlotteBronte’sbestliteraryproduction.
Bronteusesherexperienceasteacherandgovernesstoaddresscertainsocialambiguitiescommoninthe1800s.Thoughoftenbettereducatedthantheiremployers,governessesweresociallyfarbelowthem,notquiteservantbutdefinitelynotequal.Morally,ourheroineisseveralnotchesabovethemanshereferstoasMaster.Jane’sassertiontoRochesteronmorethanoneoccasionthatsheishisequalisespeciallypoignant.Shedeclinestobecomehismistress,preferringtochooseapaththatleavesherpennilessbutnotmorallybankrupt.Shedeclares,“Themoresolitary,themorefriendless,themoreunsustainedIam,themoreIwillrespectmyself.”【1】
ErikKnies’introductionofhiseditionisrichwithinsightaboutBronte’slifeandthecreationofthisclassicnovel.Thisisagreatbooktovisitforthefirsttimeduringthelongcoldwinter,orrevisitforthoseofuswhohaven’tpickeditupinadecadeorso.Beautifullanguagenevergoesoutofstyle.
ErikKniessaidinhisessay:
“Goodness,ofallvirtuesanddignitiesofthemind,isthegreatest,beingthecharacteroftheDeity,andwithoutit,manisabusy,mischievous,wretchedthing,nobetterthanakindofvermin.”【2】
Thatistosayapersonwithoutgoodnessisdestinedtoloseeverything.Inthenovelsomepeopleseemtodoubttheexistenceofthegoodnessinhumanity.Theyattachimportancetomoneyandbenefit.ButinJane’sopinion,moneyisnottheonlyrealobjectwhileemotionsandmoralityaremoreimportant.Shepaysattentiontohonestyandkindnessofpeople.
Andinthisnovel,theheroine’sadamancy,independent,rebellionfullydisplaysherintensefemaleconsciousness.Femaleconsciousnessiswoman’sself-consciousnessofstatusintheobjectiveworld.Itisapersonalmotivetostimulatewomen’spursuitforindependence,freedom,initiative,creativity.Concretelyspeaking,femaleconsciousnessmeanswomenwakeupandfulfillherhistoricalmission,socialresponsibility,personalobligation,meanwhiletheyknowtheirself-featurewellandtakepartinsocialactivitiesintheirownways.
ThisthesisaimsatJaneEyre’ssenseoflove.Underherrebellionandself-respect,sheliterallyhasgotafieryheartforherlove.
ChapterIJaneEyre’sLoveValue
Loveisthemostbeautifulcharacteristicofhumanbeings’life.Andlovecannotbemeasuredbystatus,powerorproperty.Tomostpeople,theyliketoseekameaningful,romanticrelationshipresultinginlove,commitment,companionshipandhappiness.Forpeople,itismostimportantthatamanandawomanhaveheartandfeelingsthatfindaperfectresponse,andalsohavemutualaffinity.JaneandRochestergettrueloveafteralotofsufferings.Afteracquaintance,thenattractingeachother,andfallinginlovedeeply,theymeetmanyobstacles.
A.HerRebellionandLoveValue
Janeispoor,plainanddiminutive,butinfrontoflove,shedisplayedtheunusualcourageandastonishingbold.Sheexpressedherlovetoherloverbravelyinsteadoflickinghershoesandcurryingfavoringwithhim.Onthecontrary,sheexpressedinjustandseveretermsthatshouldmaintainindependenceandkeepinitiativeaswellastheequalityofthesexes.Rochesterhasfalleninlovewithherspecialpersonality.JustlikeRochestersaid:
“butregardinglimpidvision,fluentenunciation,regardingthatenthusiasmlikefiremind,bothfullofaffectionandsteady,alsodocilefirmprefersdeathtohumiliationthedisposition,Iamactuallygentleandfaithfulforever”.【3】Whatanexquisitesummary,RochesterlovesJaneEyre’scharacterwithkind,wise,self—respectandfirm.
Sheannouncedthatthetruebasisofmarriagecouldnotbeother,exceptlove.Atruelovedosenotdependonexternalconditions,itisbasedonlyonthemutualunderstanding,respectandattraction.Thisreflectedherviewsaboutthevalueofhuman,shebelievedthatthevalueofapersonwasnotreliedontheproperty,statusandqualificationaswellasotherexternalfactorsbutontheinternalfactorssuchasthought,moralcharacter,andintelligenceandsoon.JaneEyreresolutelyprovedthattruelovecouldbreakthroughthegapbetweenage,andbackgroundexperienceofthedifferentnaturalorman-madebarriers,solongasmenandwomencouldachievethespiritualconjunction,mindcommunication.
Marriagewithoutloveisnotonlypainfulbutalsopitiful.Trueloveismutualcommunicationbetweenheartsaswellasmutualcontribution.WhenJaneEyreknewthatRochesterwasreadytomarryprettyandyoungladybutstillwantedJaneEyretostaywithhim,shegotgreatlyhurt.Therefore,sheannouncedloudlytoRochester:
“IsitonlybecauseIampenniless,haveanordinarylookandcannotattractpublicattentionthatIhavenosoulandheart?
Ihavethesamerichheartasyours.I’mnotspeakingtoyouaccordingtotheconventionsandcustomsnorwithmyfleshbody.Itismysoulthatispouringouttoyoursoul,asifwetwoarepassingthroughthetombsstandingunderthefeetofGod,absolutelyequaltoeachother.”[4]
Thisisnotonlythelovemainfestoofseekingfreedomandequality.
B.HerAttitudeTowardsMen
JaneEyreleftwhenshefoundthesecretofRochester’smadwife.Rochester’smadwifebecamethemainhindrancebetweenJaneandRochester.BerthaMason.Obviously,theplotisthecriticismonEnglishmarriagesystem.However,JanerefusedtocohabitwithRochesteraftertheirmarriagewasdisclosed.Shewouldrathergetamarriagewhichispermittedandadmiredbyothermembersinthesocietythanbeamistress,whichislookeddownuponaccordingtotheleadingtrendofthought.LoveisimportanttoJaneEyre,butcharacterandesteemismoreimportant.“ThemoreIamsingle,aloneandnoonetodependon,themoreIrespectmyself”[5]whatJaneEyrewantsisthelovewithrespect.Soshe,refusingherselfasRochester’sloveranddefendingforherowndignity,haschosenthelatter.
Itisknownthatmenaresuperiortowomen.Theygotogoodschool;theycanbeofficer;theycanbebusinessmenaswell;andtheyalsohaverighttodoeverything.Womenareonlytheaffiliateofmen.Womenhavenostatus.ThereasonwhyJaneEyregetshighlyapprisesisthatitportraysanimageoutofordinariness.JaneEyreisnotreconciledtoplaytherolethatthesocietyappointed.Shemaintainsherrespectbyherhardworking,wisdom,andthestrongindividualism.ShebelievesthathumanisequalatGod’sfeet.TherelationshipbetweenJaneEyreandRochesterchangesfromhostandservanttoequalcouple.
JaneEyrestrugglescontinuallytoachieveequalityandtoovercomeoppression.Inadditiontoclasshierarchy,shemustfightagainstthosewhobelievewomenareinferiortomen.Threecentralmalefiguresthreatenherdesireforequalityanddignity:
Mr.Brocklehurst,EdwardRochester,andSt.JohnRivers,eachtrytokeepJaneinasubmissiveposition,wheresheisunabletoexpressherownthoughtsandfeelings.Inherquestforindependenceandself—knowledge,shemustescapefromBrocklehurst,rejectSt.JohnandcometoRochesteronlyafterensuringthattheymaygetmarriedequally.ShewillnotrelysolelyonRochesterforloveandshecanbefinanciallyindependent.JanerejectsmarriagestoRochesterandSt.Johnbecausesheunderstandsshewillhavetoforfeitherindependenceintheunions,andmarryRochesteronlywhenshehasattainedthefinancialindependenceandself-respecttomaintainamarriageofequality.JaneEyre’srejectiontoJohn’sproposehasfurtherindicateherloveview:
