1.LudwigvanBeethoven
Beethoven(1770-1827)wasaGermancomposer.HeisuniversallyrecognizedasoneofthegreatestcomposersoftheWesternEuropeanmusictradition.Hisworkscrownedtheclassicalperiodandalsoeffectivelyinitiatedtheromanticerainmusic.
2.OscarWilde
Oscar(1854-1900)wasanIrishplaywright,novelist,poet,andshortstorywriter.Knownforitswit,hewasoneofthemostsuccessfulplaywrightsoflateVictorianLondon,andoneofthegreatestcelebritiesofhisday.Asaresultofafamoustrial,hesufferedadramaticdownfallandwasimprisonedfortwoyearsofhardlaborafterbeingconvictedofthehomosexualoffences.
III.TextStructureAnalysis
Thepassageisapieceofargumentationwhichtriestoconvinceusthatseekingfamesometimesleadstoone’sdestruction.Thepassagecanberoughlydividedinto6parts.
ThefirstpartisParagraph1,whichistheargumentforthewholepassage,Chasingfameoftenleadstoself-destruction.Thenthepassagecontinuestoargueforthepointfromfourdifferentaspects.
Thesecondpartconsistsoffourparagraphs,fromParagraph2toParagraph5.Inthispartthewritertriestoconvinceusthattheconquestoffameisnoeasyjobandthatalongwithfameandfortune,therecomesomenegativeeffectswhichcouldbedisastrous.InParagraph2,thewriterarguesthatthoughtheconquestoffameisdifficultatbest,thelureoffameishardtoresist.Paragraph3tellsusthatevenifanartistsucceededbydevelopingtheirowntalent,itwouldbehardtokeeptheaudience’slastingenthusiasm.InParagraph4thewriterargueswithsomeexamplesthatsuccessfulandfamousartistsoftenhaveadistinctivestyle.Butthisalsolimitstheminthattheydon’thavethefreedomtoexpressthemselveswithotherstylesorforms.Paragraph5tellsusthatthepressuretokeeppublicattentioncanbetoomuchforsomeartist.Theyhavetopleasetheaudiencesometimesagainsttheirownwill.
ThethirdpartisParagraph6,showingushowharditisforsuccessfulartiststoremaintruetothemselves.OscarWilde,knownforhisuncompromisingbehavior,isjustanexample.
ThefourthpartisParagraph7,tellingusthatthegreatestwinners,oddlyenough,arethosewhoinitiallyfailintheconquestoffame.Theyenjoythefreedomtoexpressthemselvesinuniqueandoriginalwayswithoutfearoflosingthesupportoftheirfansandtheycanevencomfortthemselvesbysayingthattheirgeniusistoosophisticatedforcontemporaryaudiences.
ThefifthpartisParagraph8,convincinguswithexamplesthatsomesuccessfulartistshaveexperiencedsuccessivefailuresbeforetheirfinalsuccess.Forthesepeoplefailurehasmotivatedthemtoworkevenhardertosucceed,whiletomostpeople,failureistheendoftheirstruggle,notthebeginning.
ThesixthpartistheParagraph9,whichistheconclusionofthepassage.Thewriteroffershisadvicetothoseseekingfameandfortunethatoncetheysucceedtheymightfinditisnotreallywhattheywanted.Soinstead,peopleshoulddowhattheyarehappywith.Theresultmightbethatyouarenotfamousbutyoucancreatebetterart.
