Moreover,theyoungerteachersthemselves evidently havelittleknowledgeofthesevitalstructuresoflanguagebecausetheyalsowentwithout exposure tothem. Schoolsfailto adequately teachtheessentialframeworkoflanguage,accurategrammarandpropervocabulary,whiletheyshouldtaketheresponsibilityofpushingtheyoungontothepathof competent communication.
8 Sincegrammarisboringtomostoftheyoungstudents,Ithinkthatitmustbehandleddelicately,stepbystep. ThechancecamewhenonedayIwasdrivingwithmyson. Aswesetoutonourtrip,henoticedabirdin jerky flightandsaid,"It'sflyingsounsteady." Icarefullyasked,"Myson,howisthebirdflying?

11 Perhaps,languageshouldbelookeduponasaroadmapandavaluablepossession:
oftenstudytheroadmap(checkgrammar)and tune upthecarengine(adjust vocabulary). Learninggrammarandagoodvocabularyisjustlikedrivingwitharoadmapinawell-conditionedcar.

Outofdate?
1 Whenthegoinggetstough,thetoughtake accounting. Whenthejobmarketworsens,manystudents calculate theycan'tmajorinEnglishorhistory. Theyhavetostudysomethingthat boosts their prospects oflandingajob.
2 Thedatashowthatasstudentshaveincreasinglyshoulderedtheever-risingcostoftuition,theyhave defected fromthestudyofthehumanitiesandtoward applied scienceand"hard"skillsthatthey bet willleadtoemployment. Inotherwords,acollegeeducationismoreandmoreseenasameansforeconomicbettermentratherthanameansforhumanbetterment. Thisisatrendthatislikelyto persist andeven accelerate.
3 Overthenextfewyears,aslabormarketsstruggle,thehumanitieswillprobablycontinuetheirlongslidein succession. Therealreadyhasbeenanearly50percentdeclineintheportionof liberal artsmajorsoverthepastgeneration,anditis logical tothinkthatthetrendis bound tocontinueorevenaccelerate. Oncethe dominant pillars ofuniversitylife,thehumanitiesnowplaylittleroleswhenstudentstaketheircollegetours. Thesedays,labsaremore vivid and compelling thanlibraries.
4 Here,pleaseallowmetostandupforand promote thetruevaluethatthehumanitiesaddtopeople'slives. Sinceancienttimes,peoplehave speculated aboutthe mystery ofthoseinnerforcesthatdrivesomepeopletogreatnessandothersto self-destruction. Thisinnerdrivehasbeencalledmanythingsoverthecenturies. Thefamouspsychologist, SigmundFreud,calleditthe"unconscious mind"or,morefamiliarly,"instinct".
5 Fromthebeginningoftime,thisinneraspectofourbeing,thisdrivethatcanbeconstructiveor destructive,hascapturedourimagination. Thestoriesofthisamazingstrugglehaveformedthebasisofculturestheworldover. Historians, architects,authors, philosophers andartistshavecapturedthewords,imagesandmeaningsofthisinnerstruggleintheformofstory,music,myth,painting,architecture,sculpture, landscape andtraditions. Thesemenandwomendevelopedartistic"languages"thathelpusunderstandtheseaspirationsandalsoeducategenerations. This fertile bodyofworkfromancienttimes,theveryfoundationofcivilization,formsthebasisofstudyofthehumanities.
6 Studyingthehumanitiesimprovesourabilitytoreadandwrite. Nomatterwhatwedoinlife,wewillhaveahugeadvantageifwecanreadcomplexideasandunderstandtheirmeaning. Wewillhaveabrightcareerifwearethepersonintheofficewhocanwriteaclearand elegant analysis ofthoseideas!
7 Studyingthehumanitiesmakesusfamiliarwiththelanguageofemotionandthecreativeprocess. Inaninformationeconomy,manypeoplehavetheabilitytoproduceausefulproductsuchasanewMP3player. Yet,veryfewpeoplehavetheabilitytocreatea spectacular brand:
theiPod. Mostimportantly,studyingthehumanities invests uswithgreat insight andself-awareness, thereby releasingourcreativeenergyandtalentinapositiveandconstructivemanner.
8 Perhapsthebestargumentinfavorofthehumanitiesisthe scope ofpossibilitiesthatarewidelyopentous. Didyouknowthat JamesCameron,world-famousdirectorofthemovie, Titanic,graduatedwithadegreeinthehumanities?
Sodid SallyRide,thefirstwomaninspace. Sodidactors BruceLee, GwynethPaltrow, ReneeZellweger and MattDamon. Dr. HaroldVarmus,whowonaNobelPrizeforMedicine,studiedthehumanities. Even MichaelEisner,ChairmanoftheDisneyCompany,majoredinthehumanities. Famouspeoplewhostudiedthehumanitiesmakealonglistindeed. It'seasytoseethatthehumanitiescanprepareusformanydifferentcareersandjobswecan undertake,whethermedicine,business,scienceorentertainment. Ifwestudyonlymathematics,it'slikelywewillbea candidate onlyforjobsasamathematician. Ifweincludestudyingthehumanities,wecanmake breakthroughs onmany barriers andarelimitedonlybyoureffortandimagination.
9 Ofcourse,nowadays,ifwestudythehumanitiesalone,weare liable tomissmanyopportunities. Eachoneofusneedstobecomeastechnicallyandprofessionallyskilledaspossibletohelpmeettheneedsofmodernlife. Infact,increasinglyapairingoftechnicalknowledgeandinnerinsightisseenastheidealinthe establishment ofacareer. IfIwerethe Dean ofAdmissionsatamedicalschoolandtwopeopleappliedtoourschool,bothhavingtherequiredbasicscientificcourses,oneaphilosophymajorandtheother solely apre-medstudent,thephilosophyapplicantwouldbechosen.
