Introduction
Thetopicinthismoduleis“LifeintheFuture”.Beforetheclass,theteachermayencouragethestudentstofindsomepicturesofsomebuildingsandbringthepicturestotheclassroomforuse.TheymayalsosurftheInternettofindsomevocabularyusedtodescribeenvironmentandbuildingmaterials.Tobeginthisparttheteachermayshowthestudentsthepicturesinthebookandcarryoutanactivityofaskingandansweringquestionsusingthequestionsthebookprovides.Theteachermayalsohaveabrainstormintheclasswiththehelpofthequestionsgiven.InActivity2theteachermayshowthestudentssuchwordsas“brick”“concrete”“mud”andsoon.Explainsomeifnecessary.Afterthattheteachermayencouragethestudentstotalkaboutthepicturestheybringtotheclassingroupsusingthewordstheylearnedinthispart.Attheendofthislessontherepresentativeswillbeaskedtoactouttheirdialogue.
ReadingandVocabulary
Theteachermaylistthenewwordsoraskthestudentstofindthenewwordsinthecourseofpreviewingthetext.Byguessingfromthewholecontexttheywillhaveagoodsenseofenlargingtheirvocabularyandthisisveryimportantinlearningalanguage.ThemainideaofthispassageisabouttheCityoftheFuture.Whilereadingthispassage,somereadingstrategiesarenecessary:
skimming—fastreadingtofindoutthegeneralideaofthepassageaswellastheanswerstooneortwoquestions;scanning—carefulreadingtolookforimportantfacts;guessing—trytoguessunknownwordsfromthecontext,understandtheauthor’sattitudeandideasfromthecontextandunderstandtheintention.
Intheteachingofthereading,theteachercanorganizedifferentreadingactivitiesaccordingtothecontentofthetextonpurposetotraintheabovereadingstrategiesandhelpthemdevelopgoodreadinghabitsfromtheverybeginning.
Function
Thefunctionofthismoduleis“talkingaboutthefuture”.ThroughthereadingoftheextractsfromtheCityoftheFuturethestudentsmayhaveabetterunderstandingofwhentousewithcountablenounsandwhentousewithuncountablenouns.Someexplanationfromtheteachermaybeinvolvedifnecessary.AndActivity2canactasakindofconsolidation.
ListeningandSpeaking
Inthispartthestudents’listeningandspeakingabilitiesaretrained.Firstthestudentsareencouragedtousetheirimaginationtoafullextentanddrawapictureoftheirfuturehomeandthenhaveadiscussion.Thusspeakingcanserveasthewarmingupoflistening.Throughlisteningthestudentsmayhaveabetterunderstandingofthefuturehome.
Grammar
Thegrammarinthismoduleisthefuturecontinuous.Thefuturecontinuousisformedwithwillbeandthe-ingformoftheverb.Itsfunctionistomakepredictions,i.e.itdescribeasituationwhichwillbeinprogressatagivenmomentinthefuture.Tomakethestudentsclear,theteacherhadbettergivestudentssomeexercisesforconsolidation.
Pronunciation
Thepronunciationinthismoduleisstress.Theteachermaychooseashortparagraphfromthepassageandthenaskthemtofindthestressedwordsthemselves.Afterthatyoumayplaythetapeforthestudentstolistenandchecktheiranswers.
