referringtoAlexandreDumas(1802-70),knownasDumasPere,Frenchnovelistanddramatist.DumasdelightedreadersinmanycountrieswithhishighlyromanticnovelsimmortalizingtheadventuresofthethreemusketeersandtheCountofMonteCristo.TheThreeMusketeerswaspublishedin1844andCountofMonteCristoin1845.Boththesenovelshavehadenormouspopularityandhavebeentranslatedintonearlyeverylanguage.

ThomasNashorNashe(1567-1601)wasajournalistwithakeenweaponofsatire,whosepamphletsappealedtopublicinterestinseriousquestions,suchasthepowerofthebishops,andinprivatescandal.NashimitatedthepicaresquenovelofadventureinTheUnfortunateTraveller(1594),whichnarratesthepracticaljokes,travels,andadventuresofJackWilton,anEnglishboyadriftontheContinentenlivenedbyfictitiousinterviewswithimportantpersons,fictitiouseyewitnessaccountsofstrikingevents,andotherjournalistictricks.In1597,together.WithBenJonson,hewrotethecomedyTheIsleofDogs,whichcausedtheimprisonmentofseveralpersons,includingJonsonhimselffor“seditious(煽动性的)andslanderous(诽谤性的)”language.
5.Dekker
ThomasDekker’sdateofbirthisguessedtobebetween1570and1577.Almostnothingisknownofhislife,buthisindividualityissodistinctlyreflectedinhisplaysthatheseemsoneofthemostdefinitefiguresofhistime--asunnylight-heartednature,fullofreal,evenifsomewhatdisorderlygenius.TheShoemaker’sHoliday(1600),perhapshisearliestplay,ishisbest.ItisadelightfuldomesticcomedyconcerningthesuccessofSimonEyre,amastershoemakerwhobecomesthelordmayorofLondon.Theplayisnotableforitsrealisticdepiction(描述、叙述)ofeverydaylifein17th-centuryLondon.Dekkerwroteoneothercharmingplay,OldFortunatus,adramatizedfairytaleofthewishing-hatandexhaustlesspurse.Dekkerinhispamphletssatirizesthefops(奢华)andgallants(华丽)ofhisday.
6.Carlyle:
ThomasCarlyle(1795-1881),EnglishauthorbornatEcclefechan,avillageoftheScotchlowlands.AftergraduatingfromtheUniversityofEdinburgh,herejectedtheministry,forwhichhehadbeenintended,anddeterminedtobeawriterofbooks.In1826hemarriedJaneWelsh,awell-informedandambitiouswomanwhodidmuchtofurtherhiscareer.TheymovedtoJane’sfarmatCraigenputtochwheretheylivedfor6years(1828-34).DuringthistimeheproducedSartorResartus(1833-34),thebookinwhichhefirstdevelopedhischaracteristicstyleandthought.Thisbookisaveiledsardonic(抨击、批评)attackupontheshamsandpretencesofsociety,uponhollowrank,hollowofficialism,hollowcustom,outofwhichlifeandusefulnesshavedeparted.In1837hepublishedTheFrenchRevolution,apoeticrendering(描写、表现)andnotafactualaccountofthegreateventinhistory.Besidesthesetwomasterpieces,hewroteChartism(1840),OnHeroes,HeroWorship,andtheHeroicinHistory(1841),PastandPresent(1843)andothers.Carlyledevelopedapeculiarstyleofhisownwhichwascalled“Carlylese”.Hisstylewasacompoundofbiblicalphrases,colloquialisms,Teutonic(日耳曼人的、条顿人的)twists(手法),andhisowncoining(模式),arrangedinunexpectedsequences.Oneofthemostimportantsocialcriticsofhisday,Carlyleinfluencedmanymenoftheyoungergeneration,amongthemMatthewArnoldandRuskin..
7.Lamb
CharlesLamb(1775-1834),Englishessayist,wasborninLondonandbroughtupwithintheprecincts(区域、范围)oftheancientlawcourts,hisfatherbeingaservanttoanadvocateoftheInner-Temple.HewenttoschoolatChrist’sHospital,wherehehadforaclassmateColeridge,hislifelongfriend.Atseventeen,hebecameaclerkintheIndiaHouse,andhereheworkedfor33yearsuntilhewasretiredonapension(养老金,退休金),HisdevotiontohissisterMary,uponwhomrestedanhereditarytaint(污点)ofinsanity(精神错乱),hasdonealmostasmuchasthesweetnessandgentlehumorofhiswritingstoendearhisname.Theycollaboratedonseveralbooksforchildren,publishingin1867theirfamousTalesfromShakespeare.Hisdramaticessays,SpecimensofEnglishDramaticPoets(1808),establishedhisreputationasacriticanddidmuchin,revivingthepopularityofElizabethandrama.TheEssaysofElla,publishedatintervalsinLondonMagazine,weregatheredtogetherandrepublishedintwoseries,thefirstin1823,andthesecondtenyearslater.TheyestablishedLambinthetitlewhichhestillholds,thatofthemostdelightfulofEnglishessayists.(Note:
