OneCallNowjoinsagrowingforceofcompaniesacrosstheUnitedStatestowelcomepetsintheworkplace.Whileonly17percentofU.S.employerscurrentlyallowanimalsintheworkplace,accordingtoasurveyfromtheAmericanPetProductsManufacturersAssociation,pet-friendly,oftenspecificallydog-friendly,environmentsarebuildingsteam.FrommajorcompanieslikeGoogle,Zynga,andAtogrowingstart-ups,moreandmorecaninecompanionsareshowinguptowork.
Formanyentrepreneurs,theinceptionofadog-friendlyenvironmentbeginslongbeforeofficesenterthepicture.“Mydog,Blueberry,wasthefoundingdog,”explainsRandyHetrik,founderofTRXTraining.“Literally,itwashimandmebeforeanyotherpeoplecamein,sohetakesgreatprideinwhatwe’veaccomplished.”AsHetrikbuilthiscompany,heneverforgothisfirstpartner.Today,uptotendogswanderwithBlueberrythroughthefourfloorsofTRX’sSanFranciscooffice.
Manypet-friendlyworkenvironmentsdevelopasapartofthecompany’slargermissionorcompanyculture.Afterspendingyearsinuptightcorporateclimates,NancySquiresfoundedherownconsultingfirm,TheSquiresGroup,withadistinctlyhomeyatmosphere,whichincludedhertwoItaliangreyhounds.
MarketingsoftwarecompanyG5’sdog-friendlinessfitsintotheanimal-friendlyclimateoftheirmountaintownBend,Oregon,aswellasthecompany’sownculturalbackbone.“Wetrytohaveaculturethatpromotesfreedomfortheemployeesandhelpsthemthrive,”saysG5CEODanHobin.“Ifthatinvolvesbringingyourdogtowork,bringyourdogtowork.”
Havingdogsunderfootmightseemtosomelikeadistraction,butadvocatesofanimalsintheworkplaceseequitetheopposite.Dogsintheofficefosterfriendlier,morecollaborativeworkenvironments.AtG5,thisincludesdogsposingasmascotsforthecompany’svariousdivisions.“Everyoneralliesaroundthedogs,”Hobinsays.
Employeessurroundedbydogsalsohaveatendencytorallyaroundtheirjobs.Accordingtoasurveyof50smallandlargecompaniesbytheAmericanPetProductsManufacturersAssociationin2008,companiesthatallowpetsintheworkplaceseealowerrateofemployeeabsenteeism(旷工)andmorewillingnesstoworklongerhours.
“Therearealotofpeoplewhoknowtheyhavetospendextrahoursatwork,particularlyinthiseconomicclimate,”saysDebrahSchnackenberg,vicepresidentofemergencyservicesfortheAmericanHumaneAssociation.“Peoplefeelcomfortablespendingthatextrahourortwoattheofficewhentheyknowtheirdogisrighttherewiththem.”
Dog-friendlinessmaygeneratemoreloyaltyforthecompanyasawhole.Inthelasttwoyears,OneCallNowhasseenatwoorthreepercentturnoverrate.Lurieattributesthissmallnumberinparttotheofficepets.“Youasksomeonewhoisina$12-an-hourjob,‘Wouldyouworkanywhereelse?
’Andtheysay,‘Noway.’WhereelsecouldIbringmydogtowork?
”hesays.
Thissenseofloyaltystemsfromasimpleconcept:
Dogsmakepeoplehappy.“They’realwayshappytoseeyou,they’rehappyforthesmallestthings,andthey’reeveroptimistic,”saysHetrik.“Havingadogwanderingaroundjustseemstomakepeoplesmile.”
Inhigh-performanceorhigh-stressworkenvironments,dogscannotonlyspreadsmilesbutalsoeasetension.Takingawalk,practicingatrick,orevenabsentmindedlyscratchingadogbehindtheearallowseventhemostworked-upemployeetorelaxandreprioritize.“It’stheircigarette,”saysSquires.“Thedogsareasenseofpeace,gentleness,adiversion,somethingotherthanwhatwedefineaswork.Ithinkit’sagreatbreak.”
And,adogbreakiscertainlyhealthierthanasmokebreak.Numerousstudieshaveshownthathavingthecompanionshiporevenbeinginthepresencesofapet,forinstanceintheworkplace,lowersbloodpressureandcortisollevelswhileheighteningendorphinsandoxytocin,thehormonelinkedtomaternalbonding.Suchanemotionalconnectionishealthyforyourdogaswell.“Dogsbondtotheirhumansandwouldratherbewiththemthannot,”saysSchnackenberg.“Fromanemotionalwell-beingperspective,it’shealthyforadogtobewiththeirownerthroughouttheday.”
Withtheirmanyattributesandbenefits,dogsplayacriticalroleinpet-friendlycompany’shiringprocesses.Alloftheaforementionedcompaniesandmanymorelikethemusetheirdogsintheinterviewprocesstointroducepotentialemployeestothecorporateclimate.Theirreactionstotheanimalsalsoserveasacompatibilitytest.“I’venevermetadog-friendlypersonwhowasn’tacustomer-friendlyperson,”saysLurie.“Andwehirecustomer-friendlypeople.”
Thedogun-friendlyortheallergenic,however,neednotapply.
“Youtrytobuildacompanyofpeoplewhocanrallyaroundavision,anddogsplayapartofthat,”Hetriksays.“Peoplewholookatthatandsayhowstinkyorhairyorwhateverprobablyaren’tpeoplethataregoingtomoldwellintothecasual,roughandtumble,workhard,playhardworkenvironmentthatI’vecreated.”
TheSquiresGroupmaintainsasimilarmantra(口号).“Ifpeopledon’tdodogs,theremaybeanotherpartofthecompanytheydon’tdo,”Squiressays.“I’mnotsayingthey’rebadpeopleorthattheywouldn’tbegreatforothercompanies,buttheywouldn’tfitourcompanygreatly.”
Companiesconsideringintroducingadog-friendlyworkenvironmentshouldconsideradoptingapetpolicy.Whenadvisingcompaniesinthistransition,theAmericanHumanAssociationsuggestshighlightingclearrulesaboutwhenyoucanbringyourdogin,whatbehaviorisexpected,andwhathappenswhenthepetorpersondoesnotconformtothoserules.
Manysmallcompaniesadopttheseadvisedpolicies,butgoverntheirpetsinamoreadhoc(非正式的)manner.Afterafewminor“accidents,”G5’sHRDepartmentdevelopedadetailedpetpolicytoincludeinthecompanyhandbook.“Idon’tthinkIactuallyeverreadit,”admitsHobin.“Inshort,though,thepolicyistoberesponsibleandrespectful.”
AtTRX,dogsareunderthesameconsiderationsaspeople.“Youwouldn’ttoleratealotofbarking,snappingandsnarlingfromthepeopleyouworkwith,”Hetriksays.“Neithershouldyoutolerateitfromthecaninepalstheybringtowork.We’reprettyclearonallthat.”Growingcompaniesshouldalsobeflexibletochangingthestipulationsintheirpolicyastheydevelop.
AdjustmentstotheTRXpetpolicyareunderconsiderationasthecompanyintendstoexpanditsworkforcefrom120to300employees.Thecompanymayintroduceasign-up,limitingthetotalnumberofdogstothecurrenttwotothreeperfloor.Nomatterthechanges,though,dogswillremainafixtureinthecompany.
“Dogswerepartofthefabricfromtheverybeginning,”saysHetrik.“Andthey’llbehereuntiltheveryend.Ilikehavingthesepupsaround.”
