TextA
TheManintheWater
Asdisastersgo,thisonewasterrible,butnotunique,certainlynotamongtheworstU.S.aircrashesonrecord.
Therewastheunusualelementofthebridge,ofcourse,andthefactthattheplanehititatamomentofhightraffic.Then,too,therewasthelocationoftheevent.
Washington,thecityofformandrules,turnedchaoticbyablastofrealwinterandasingleslapofmetalonmetal.
ThejetsfromWashingtonNationalAirportthatnormallyflyaroundthepresidentialmonumentslikehungrygullsare,forthemomentrepresentedbytheonethatfell.
Andtherewastheaestheticclashaswell—blue-and-greenAirFlorida,thenameofaflyinggarden,sunkdownamonggreychunksoficeinablackriver.
herb=grass草:
Allthatwasworthnoticing,tobesure.
Still,therewasnothingveryspecialinanyofit,exceptdeath,which,whilealwaysspecial,doesnotnecessarilybringthenationtotearsortoattention.
Why,then,theshockhere?
Perhapsbecausethenationsawinthisdisastersomethingmorethanamechanicalfailure.
Perhapsbecausepeoplesawinitnofailureatall,butrathersomethingsuccessfulaboutthemselves.
Here,afterall,weretwoformsofnatureincollision:
theelementsandhumancharacter.
LastWednesday,theelements,indifferentasever,broughtdownFlight90.
Onthatsameafternoon,humannature—gropingandstruggling—rosetotheoccasion.
Ofthefouracknowledgedheroesoftheevent,threeareabletoaccountfortheirbehavior.
DonaldUsherandEugeneWindsor,aparkpolicehelicopterteam,riskedtheirliveseverytimetheydippedtheirskidsintothewatertopickupsurvivors.
Ontelevision,sidebyside,theydescribedtheircourageasallinthelineofduty.
LennySkutnik,a28-year-oldemployeeoftheCongressionalBudgetOffice,said,"It'ssomethingIneverthoughtIwoulddo"—referringtohisjumpingintothewatertodraganinjuredwomantoshore.
Skutnikaddedthat"somebodyhadtogoinwater",deliveringeveryhero'slinethatisnolessadmirableforbeingrepeated.
IdidnotmarryherbecauseIlovedher.
Heisverysadnotbecausehisyoungersisterdisappeared.
Heisnotverysadbecausehisyoungersisterdisappeared.
A:
(X)
Hewasnotabsentfromthemeetingbecausehewasill.
A:
(X)
SheisnotlearningEnglishverywellbecausesheisslow-witted.

Infact,nobodyhadtogointothewater.Thatsomebodyactuallydidsoispartofthereasonthisparticulartragedysticksinthemind.
Butthepersonmostresponsiblefortheemotionalimpactofthedisasteristheoneknownatfirstsimplyas"themaninthewater".
Balding,probablyinhis50s,ahugemustache.
Hewasseenclingingwithfiveothersurvivorstothetailsectionoftheairplane
ThismanwasdescribedbyUsherandWindsorasappearingalertandincontrol.
Everytimetheyloweredalifelineandflotationringtohim,hepasseditontoanotherofthepassengers.
Inamasscasualty,you'llfindpeoplelikehim,butI’veneverseenonewiththatcommitment.
Whenthehelicoptercamebackforhimthemanhadgoneunder.
Hisselflessnesswasonereasonthestoryheldnationalattention;hisanonymityanother.
Thefactthathewentunidentifiedgavehimauniversalcharacter.
ForawhilehewasEveryman,andthusproof(asifoneneededit)thatnomanisordinary.
Still,hecouldneverhave imaginedsuchacapacityinhimself.
Onlyminutesbeforehischaracterwastested,hewassittingintheordinaryplaneamongtheordinarypassengers,listeningtothestewardesstellinghimtofastenhisseatbeltandsayingsomethingaboutthe"nosmoking"sign.
Soourmanrelaxedwiththeothers,someofwhomwouldowetheirlivestohim.
Perhapshestartedtoread,ortodoze,ortoregretsomeharshremarkmadeintheofficethatmorning.
Thensuddenlyheknewthatthetripwouldnotbeordinary.
Likeeveryotherpersononthatflight,hewasdesperatetolive,whichmakeshisfinalactsostunning.
Forsomemomentinthewaterhemusthaverealizedthathewouldnotliveifhecontinuedtohandovertheropeandringtoothers.
Hehadtoknowit,nomatterhowslowtheeffectofthecold. Hefelt hehadnochoice.
Whenthehelicoptertook offwithwhatwastobethelastsurvivor,hewatched everythingintheworld moveaway fromhim,andheletithappen.
Yettherewassomethingelseaboutourmanthatkeptourthoughtsonhim,andwhichkeepsourthoughtsonhimstill.
Hewasthere,intheessential,classiccircumstance.Maninnature.Themaninthewater.
Foritsparts,naturecarednothingaboutthefivepassengers.Ourman,ontheotherhand,caredtotally.
Sotheage-oldbattlebeganagaininthePotomac.
Foraslongasthatmancouldlast,theywentateachother,natureandman;theonemakingnodistinctionofgoodandevil,actingonnoprinciples,offeringnolifelines;theotheractingwhollyondistinctions,principlesand,perhaps,onfaith.
Sinceitwashewholostthefight,weoughttocomeagaintotheconclusionthatpeoplearepowerlessintheworld.
Inreality,webelievetheopposite,andittakestheactofthemaninthewatertoremindusofourtruefeelingsinthismatter.

Itwouldtakeastrongmantoliftthatweight.
Thatcutistakingalongtimetoheal.
Itisnottosaythateveryonewouldhaveactedashedid,orasUsher,WindsorandSkutnik.
Yetwhatevermovedthesementochallengedeathonbehalfoftheirfellowsisnotpeculiartothem.
Everyonefeelsthepossibilityinhimself.That is the enduringwonderofthestory. Thatiswhywewouldnotletgoofit.
Ifthemaninthewatergavealifelinetothepeoplegaspingforsurvival,hewaslikewisegivingalifelinetothosewhowatchedhim.
Theoddthingisthat wedonoteven really believethatthemaninthewaterlosthisfight.
"EverythinginNaturecontainsallthepowersofNature,"saidEmerson.Exactly.Themaninthewaterhadhisownnaturalpowers.
Hecouldnotmakeicestorm,orfreezethewateruntilitfrozetheblood.Buthecouldhandlifeovertoastranger,andthatisapowerofnaturetoo.
Themaninthewatersethimselfagainstanimmovable,impersonalenemy;hefoughtitwithkindness;andheheldittoastandoff.Hewas(did)thebestwecando.
