Thepicturesofairplanesflyingintobuildings,firesburning,hugestructurescollapsing,havefilleduswithdisbelief,terriblesadnessandaquiet,unyieldinganger.
Theseactsofmassmurderwereintendedtofrightenournationintochaosandretreat.Buttheyhavefailed.Ourcountryisstrong.Agreatpeoplehasbeenmovedtodefendagreatnation.Terroristattackscanshakethefoundationsofourbiggestbuildings,buttheycannottouchthefoundationofAmerica.Theseactsshattersteel,buttheycannotdentthesteelofAmericanresolve.
Americawastargetedforattackbecausewe'rethebrightestbeaconforfreedomandopportunityintheworld.Andnoonewillkeepthatlightfromshining.Today,ournationsawevil,theveryworstofhumannature,andwerespondedwiththebestofAmerica,withthedaringofourrescueworkers,withthecaringforstrangersandneighborswhocametogivebloodandhelpinanywaytheycould.
Immediatelyfollowingthefirstattack,Iimplementedourgovernment'semergencyresponseplans.Ourmilitaryispowerful,andit'sprepared.OuremergencyteamsareworkinginNewYorkCityandWashington,D.C.,tohelpwithlocalrescueefforts.Ourfirstpriorityistogethelptothosewhohavebeeninjuredandtotakeeveryprecautiontoprotectourcitizensathomeandaroundtheworldfromfurtherattacks.Thefunctionsofourgovernmentcontinuewithoutinterruption.FederalagenciesinWashingtonwhichhadtobeevacuatedtodayarereopeningforessentialpersonneltonightandwillbeopenforbusinesstomorrow.Ourfinancialinstitutionsremainstrong,andtheAmericaneconomywillbeopenforbusinessaswell.
Thesearchisunderwayforthosewhoarebehindtheseevilacts.Ivedirectedthefullresourcesforourintelligenceandlawenforcementcommunitiestofindthoseresponsibleandbringthemtojustice.Wewillmakenodistinctionbetweentheterroristswhocommittedtheseactsandthosewhoharborthem.IappreciatesoverymuchthemembersofCongresswhohavejoinedmeinstronglycondemningtheseattacks.AndonbehalfoftheAmericanpeople,Ithankthemanyworldleaderswhohavecalledtooffertheircondolencesandassistance.Americaandourfriendsandalliesjoinwithallthosewhowantpeaceandsecurityintheworldandwestandtogethertowinthewaragainstterrorism.
TonightIaskforyourprayersforallthosewhogrieve,forthechildrenwhoseworldshavebeenshattered,forallwhosesenseofsafetyandsecurityhasbeenthreatened.AndIpraytheywillbecomfortedbyapowergreaterthananyofusspokenthroughtheagesinPsalm23:
