Usingphoto-editingsoftware,theresearchersattachedthefacestobodiesexpressingtheoppositeemotion,andaskedparticipantstoactouttheemotionstheysawinthephotos.
Theresultingposeswerelikethebodyposesinthephotographsbutnotthefacialexpressions,demonstratingthatpeoplebasetheirinterpretationofstrongemotionsnotonthefacebutthebody.
DrAviezer,wholedthestudy,said,“Theseresultsshowthatwhenemotionsbecomeextremelyintense,thedifferencebetweenpositiveandnegativefacialexpressionsbecomesunclear.Theresultsmayhelpresearchersunderstandhowourbodyinteractsduringemotionalsituations.Forexample,individualsmayfailtorecognizefacialexpressions,butiftheyaretrainedtoprocessimportantbodylanguage,theirperformancemaysignificantlyimprove.”
