Abstract—ThispapergivesanoverviewofthearchitectureofthetelecontrolsystembasedonGPRS.Theobjectivesofthispaperaretwofold.OneistopresentthedesignandimplementofthedatacenterofGPRSDTU.Theotheristoinvestigateitsperformance.AccordingtothefeaturesofGPRSDTU,datacenterprovidesreliablecommunicationbetweenmembersofagroupbyimplementingthetelecontrolsystemintheclient/servermodel.Withtheuseofthedatacenter,itisofpracticalsignificancetoimplementmultiplemasterstationstoreceivedatafromallslavestationssimultaneouslyandtocontrolallslavestationsinparallel.Thedatacenterdesignparametersincludereal-timecontrol,deploymentsimplificationandtheabilitytoprovidehighavailability,scalabilityandreliability.

I.INTRODUCTION
Inrecentyears,itisamajortrendtousewirelessnetworksinthelarge-scaleindustrialproductionsystemstocontrolandmanagethecomponentswhichscatteredinthedifferentremoteareas.Inordertoensuretheappropriateoperationofthesystem,thesecomponentsmustbeoperatedundertheunifiedcommandtocoordinatetheworkamongthemthroughtheschedulingagencies.Theschedulingagenciesshouldkeepabreastoftheactualproductionsituationsofthevariousparts.Onthisbasisitcanmakeregulationandcontrolstrategiesontime.Withtherapiddevelopmentofnetworktechnology,thetelecontroltechnologywhichisthecombinationofschedulingmanagementandmoderncontroltechnologycannotonlymeetthereal-timedispatch,butalsoensurehighreliability.Forimplementingefficientmeasuringandmonitoringprocesses,it’sfacilityforthetelecontrolsystemtotransmittheinformationthroughtheuseofwirelessnetworks.OneprominentcommunicationtechnologyforthisserviceistheGPRS.Thus,underthepremiseofloweringthecostandenhancingthecompetitiveness,moreandmoreenterprisesareapplyingtheGPRStechnologytoreplacethetraditionallongdistanceleasedline.Inthispaper,wegiveadetailedimplementationofpublicnetworkaccesssolutionandanalyzeitsperformance.
II.CHARACTERISTICOFGPRSNETWORK
Themostwidelydeployedpublicmobiledatanetwork,whichenablestheintegrationofIPwithmobilenetworksandconstitutesamigrationsteptowardthird-generation
communicationsystems,istheGeneralPacketRadioService(GPRS)[1].GPRSattemptstoreusetheexistingGlobalSystemforMobileCommunication(GSM)networkelementsasmuchaspossible,butinordertoeffectivelybuildapacket-basedmobilecellularnetwork,somenewnetworkelements,interfaces,andprotocolsarerequired[1].ThenewnetworknodesarecalledGPRSsupportnodes(GSNs).TheSGSNisresponsibleforthedeliveryofdatapacketsfromandtothemobilestation(MS)withinitsservicearea[2].TheGGSNactsasaninterfacebetweentheGPRSbackbonenetworkandtheexternalpacketdatanetwork[2].GPRSsupportsapplicationsbasedonstandardprotocolsforpacket-switchdatacommunication.ThestandardsincludeinterworkingprocedureswithIPandX.25networks[3].ThismakestherealizationoftheGPRSservicesfeasible,whenGPRSexchangesinformationwiththeexternalnetworkswhichbasedontheIPprotocolsuite,suchasInternet.
Thetrafficcharacteristicofthepacket-modedataeffectivelysupportedbyGPRSrangesfromintermittent,burstydatatransfer,tofrequenttransmissionof“small”amountofdata,tooccasionaltransmissionof“large”amountofdata[3].AnimportantbenefitofGPRSisthattheradiochannelsinGPRSaresharedbetweenmultipleMobileStations(MS).Second,multiplexingontheairinterfacepermitsefficientsupportofburstytraffic[3].GPRStransmissionratecanberaisedto56oreven114Kbps.Moreover,connectionsandtransmissionwillbemoreconvenientandeasier,fortheynolongerneedtheintermediaryconvertersamongtheexistingwirelessapplications[3].Moreimportantly,onceactivatetheGPRSapplications,itwillalwaysremainonline.However,mobilesubscribersonlypayaccordingtotheamountofinformationtransferred,notintermsoftheoccupiedtime.
III.DEMANDANALYSISFORTHETELECONTROLSYSTEM
Thetelecontrolsystemisabroadtermwhichreferstothesystemofmonitoringandcontrollingtheproductionprocess.Theequipmentswhichconstitutethetelecontrolsystemincludethefactorystation,theschedulingstationandthetelecontrolchannel.Traditionallyandcustomarily,wecallthefactorystationandtheschedulingstationastheslavestationandthemasterstationrespectively.
Inthesequel,theproposedtelecontrolsystembasedonGPRSdeploymentscenarioispresentedandanalyzed.Thesystemrequirestoprovidewiththeconveniencesforeasyinstallation,easyusage,remotemanageable,easily
expand,andonlytakesuplittlebandwidthfortransmittingmonitor

andmanagementinformation,etc.AsshowninFig.1,someofthekeycomponentsofthearchitectureareasfollowing:
GPRSDTUistheabbreviationforGPRSDataTerminalUnit.Insimpleterms,DTUistheGPRSwirelessdevicewhichspeciallyappliedtotransmittheserialdatathroughtheGPRSnetworks.DTUprovidesserialcommunicationinterface,suchasRS-232orRS-485.EverystationconnectswiththeGPRSDTUthroughRS-
232.Inpractice,eachGPRSDTUneedsabuild-inSIMcardwhichwasusedtoapplyforGPRSservices.
Themasterstationisthemonitorandmanagementcenter,whichprovidesaconvenientandintegrateduserinterface;witheasyinstallationandusage,aswellasallowingfortelecontrolandteleadjusting.Relatively,theslavestationistheremoteterminalunit,whichisresponsiblefordataacquisitionandtransmission.
ThedatacenterimplementsthecommunicationamongnumbersofDTUsthoughtheuseofClient/Servermodel.
Thedatacenteractsasaserver,maintainingandmanagingbidirectionalcommunicationbetweenthemasterstationsandslavestationsthoughDTUs.Insuchacommunicationmodel,whereallstationsareconnectingtothedatacenter,anddatatransferiscarriedoutusingmobiledevices(suchasGPRSDTU),stabilityandreal-timeareconsideredparamount.
IV.FUNDAMENTALSOFGPRSDTU
A.WorkingProcess
OncetheGPRSDTUpowerson,itfirstlyreadsouttheinternalflashsavedoperatingparameterswhichincludeGPRSdial-upparameters,serialportbaudrate,thedatacenterIPaddressandportnumber,andsoon.Afterthesuccessofadial-up,ainternalIPaddresswillberandomlyallocatedtoGPRSDTU.Inotherwords,GPRSDTU
worksinamobilenetwork,butitsnetworkIPaddressesarenotusuallyfixedbutchangedalongwitheachdial-up.ItmeansthatGPRSDTUisamobiledevicewithintheinternalLAN(LocalAreaNetwork)andcommunicateswiththeexternalpublicInternetnetworkthroughthemobilegateway(GGSN).Soitisimpossibletocommunicatebetweenthemasterstationandtheslavestationdirectly.ButDTUcanconnecttothedatacenterwithafixedpublicnetworkIPaddressordomainnameautomaticallyandkeepthiscommunicationlinkonline.Therefore,GPRSDTUneedstotaketheinitiativetoconnecttothedatacenter.
Specifically,GPRSDTUinitiatesaTCP(TransmissionControlProtocol)orUDP(UserDatagramProtocol)communicationrequesttothedatacenterthough
thedatacenterIPaddressandportnumberwhichwereconfiguredinadvance.Afterreceivingtheresponsefromthedatacenter,GPRSDTUmakesasuccessfulhandshakewiththedatacenterandmaintainsthecommunicationlink.Ifthecommunicationlinkwasinterrupted,GPRSDTUwouldimmediatelyre-handshakewiththedatacenter.ThentheTCP/UDPbidirectionalcommunicationlinksbetweenGPRSDTUandthedatacenterhavebeensetup.
GPRSDTUhaveintegratedTCP/IPprotocolstack,soit’srelativelysimpletocompletetheconversionbetweenuserserialdataandGPRSnetworkpacket.Whilereceivingtheuser’sserialdata,GPRSDTUimmediatelyencapsulatestheserialdataintoaTCP/UDPpacketandsendsittothedatacenter.Conversely,whenGPRSDTUreceivestheTCP/UDPpacketfromthedatacenter,itwillextractusefuldatafromthepacket,andsendthedatatotheuserequipmentthroughtheserialportatonce.
Moreimportantly,oneoftheadvantagesofGPRSnetworksisthatitsupportsGPRSterminalequipmentstokeeponlinepermanently,sotypicallyGPRSDTUisdesignedtosupportthisfunction.ItrequiresthatthefeaturesofGPRSDTUincludeautomaticallydial-up,maintainingapermanentonline,supportingre-connectionautomatically,andsoon.
B.HeartbeatPacket
Whenthereisnodatatransmissionforacertaintime,themobilegatewaywilldisconnectthecommunicationlinkbetweenthedatacenterandGPRSDTUautomatically.Formaintainingtheconnectiononline,DTUheartbeatpacketwouldbesendbeforethislinkisdisconnected.TheproblemishowlongdidDTUheartpacketbesend.Ifthesend-timeintervalwassettoolong,thereisnodatatransmission.Thenthemobilegatewayinterruptsthelink.Onthecontrary,thedatacentercan’treceivetheheartbeatpacketontimebecauseofthewirelessnetworkdelay.Ontheearth,GPRSDTUwilldeterminethatthecommunicationlinkhasdisconnectedandre-connectautomatically.Nomatterwhatkindofsituations,itwillincreaseinstabilitytothetelecontrolsystem.
