Abstract
Film,asamodeofmedia,notonlyinfluencespubliclife,butalsoconveysthesocialmainstreamvaluesatthattime.ThemodernmovieThePursuitofHappinessthroughperformingdreamsmaking,lifefaithcommunication,educationideasshapingandotherdiversityperspectives,tosomeextent,notonlycontinuesHollywood“AmericanDream”trip,butconveysAmericancontemporarymainstreamvaluesandlifebeliefs.
ThemoviewasadaptedfromthememoirThePursuitofHappynesswrittenbyChrisGardner,thefamousstockbrokerofAmerica.It’saninspiringtrue-to-life,rag-to-richesstory.Asoneofthosesinglefathers,ChrisGardnerfoughttoraisehisyoungsonwhilebeinghomelessandlivingonthestreetofSanFrancisco.Gardner,whoservedabriefstintintheNavyandhadnoeducationbeyondhighschool,wouldeventuallygetbackonhisfeettobecomeamillionairestockbrokerandbusinessowner.
Fromthebeginningtotheend,thisfilmaimstoanalyzetheAmericans“naturalright”valuesonthedecisiveinfluenceofChrisGardner’sdream.Thisessayismainlybasedonthefilm’smajorstoryplotandactor’slines.ThroughabriefanalysisoftheworkThePursuitofHappyness,wecanlearn“thepursuitofhappiness”,“persistenceinlifefaith”and“moraleducation”threecontemporaryAmericanmainstreamvalues.

I.Introduction
HollywoodisaplacecalledDreamWorksthatmanufacturesdreams;theUnitedStates,becauseofitsuniquesocialenvironment,isalsoknownastheplacewheredreamscanberealized.Itcreatedagreatdreamspacetofilm.MostoftheHollywoodfilmsconveytheircontemporaryAmericanmainstreamvalues.HollywoodmovieThePursuitofHappynessisatypicalAmericaninspirationalfilmsearchingAmericandreams.ThoughithadnotwonanOscar,thefilmwonthehighestboxoffice.ThefilmadaptedfromtheautobiographyinthesamenamebyChrisGardner,afamousblackAmerican,anexpertininvestment,tellshishardtimesfromthesalesmantoasuccessfulmanager,includinghiswife’sbetrayal,bankruptcy,homelessnessandothersufferings.Alldifficultieshavenotdefeatedhim.Healwaysmaintainsoptimismwithhissonandstrugglescontinuallyforhisowngoal;atlast,hewinsthesuccessandgainsthehappiness.
ThefilmThePursuitofHappynessissuchamovinginspirationalclassicstorywhichtellsthatChrisGardner,fromtheslumstoWallStreet,asasinglefather,hasneverbetrayedaftersufferings;especially,ChrisactedbymoviestarWillSmithandthesonChristopher,theyareexactlythefatherandsoninreallifethatstrengthentheaffectionbetweenfatherandsoninthefilm.Chrisstrugglingtobehappyisthemainlineofthefilm,andtheaffectionbetweenfatherandsonistheviceline.IttellsaninspirationalstoryaboutthepursuitofAmericandreamandthedeepaffectionbetweenfatherandson.SothroughabriefanalysisofthefilmThePursuitofHappyness,wecanseeapartofAmericancontemporarymainstreamvalues.Ofcourse,itconveysothervalues,thisarticle,however,onlyanalyses“AmericanDream”,“thepursuitofchange”and“moraleducation”thethreemainvalues.
Americanmassmedia,especiallyfilm,advocatesthevaluessuchas:
freedom,equality,success,pursuingandindividualism.ThePursuitofHappynessisatypicalofthismode.Film,asamassmedia,inevitablyhasitsownvalues,sothroughtheanalysisofthevaluesthefilmconveys,itcanreflectcertainsocialrealities,which,inreturn,reflectsthefilm’ssocialsignificance.SothroughabriefanalysisofThePursuitofHappyness,wecansee“AmericanDream”,“thepursuitofchange”and“moraleducation”thethreecontemporaryAmericanmainstreamvalues.

ExplanationofContemporaryAmericanMainstreamValues
Valueisaveryabstractconcept,anditcontainsalotofaspects,belowisoneofthedefinitions:
Valueisthereflectionofpeople’ssocialexistenceanditiscriterionthatusedbymembersofsocietytoevaluatethebehavior,things,andchoosetheirowndesiredgoalsfromvarietypotentialtargets.Values,reflectedthroughpeople’sbehaviororientationandevaluationofthingsandattitudes,isthecoreoftheworldview,theinnerforceofdrivingpeople’sbehavior.1
ThroughtheU.S.massmedia,weknowtheAmericanvalues.Itscoreisindividualism,andindividualismwasmainlyachievedthroughself-effortaswellasself-worth.“Equalopportunityandpersonalfreedomarethebasicguaranteeofself-worth,whilecompetitionisthefundamentalwaytoachievepersonalvalues.”2Film,asamassmedia,inevitablyhasitsownvaluesinitsdelivery,sothroughtheanalysisofthevaluesthefilmconveys,itcanreflectcertainsocialrealities,anditalsocanreflectthefilm’ssocialsignificance.ThePursuitofHappynessisatypicalofthismode.
“ForthemajorityofAmericans,thecontemporarymainstreamvaluesforlifeisjusthappiness.Peopledependonitforsurviving,butitisnotimportantbyitself.Themainwaytogetmoneyistogetagoodjob,togetagoodjobistogivegenerationgoodeducation.”3Thisviewisreflectedvividlyinthefilm.Inordertosurviveandraisehisyoungson,ChrisGardnerstruggledtobehappy,fromtheslumstoWallStreet,andenduredhomeless,bylivingonthestreetofSanFranciscowillingly;inordertosuccessfullyinvestinthecompanyandbeaformalstaff,Chrisovercamesixmonthsunpaidtrialperiod,andsoon.Allthescenesinthefilmembodiedthe“AmericanDreams”,“thepursuitofchange”and“moraleducation”thethreeAmericancontemporarymainstreamvalues.
“Inmassartform,roleplaysasignificantrole,reflectingthetimesandsocietyatthattime.”4So,AmericanHollywoodfilm,alsoasamassmedia,ofcourse,conveysitsowncountry’smodernvalues.ThePursuitofHappyness,thisinspirationallargeHollywoodclassicfilmiswithoutexception.

ThePursuitofDreams
“Thepursuitofdreams”,inAmericans’view,actuallyisthepursuitofhappiness.Whatishappiness?
Interpretationsvaryfrompersontoperson.InChrisGardner’sview;however,happinessisaverb.Hethoughthappinessisalongprocessofpursuit.
“ItwasrightthenthatIstartedthinkingaboutThomasJefferson,theDeclarationofIndependence,andthepartaboutourrighttolife,libertyandthepursuitofhappiness.AndIrememberthinking:
Howdidheknowtoputthe‘pursuit’partinthere?
Thatmaybehappinessissomethingthatwecanonlypursue.Andmaybewecanactuallyneverhaveit...nomatterwhat.Howdidheknowthat?

“AmericanDream”,thisthemehasrepeatedlybeenreflectedintheAmericanscreen.Themovie“ForrestGump”tellsastorythatachildwhoseIQisonly75withself-effortsbecamearugbystar,anentrepreneurs,amarathonexpertandeventuallyheharvestedthehappiness.Themovie“TheTerminal”isalsoastorythatattheairport,becauseofpassportproblems,Sloveniawithpennilessplightwentovertheultimatesuccessandgainedthenumerousrespects.ThemovieThePursuitofHappynessisastoryaboutadestitutefatherwithprecariouslifestrugglingthroughthehardandintheendsetuptheinvestmentcompanyofhisown.AllthesefilmsconveythecoreoftheAmericandream:
conviction,tenacity,andpersist.
TolearnspiritualcultureoftheUnitedStates,animportantpartistounderstandtheAmericandream.AmericanDreamembodiestheAmericanvalues.Americanfavor“self-motivation,freechoice,andtoachieveself-realizationthroughself-reliance”5.Theirideaisequality,freedom,competition.Intheirview,equalopportunityandindividualfreedomarethebasicguaranteeofself-worth,whilecompetitionisthebasicmeansofachievingpersonalvalues.MostAmericansthinkthatanyonecanownwillanddeterminationtocreatehisownlifetocreatehissituation–thelowestpointfromthebottomtothetopofthepeak.ThisisAmericandream.
