Soifyougiveundergraduatesfivedollars,itlookslikecoffeetothemandtheyrunovertoStarbucksandspenditasfastastheycan.Butsomepeopleboughtacoffeeforthemselves,thewaytheyusuallywould,butotherpeoplesaidthattheyboughtacoffeeforsomebodyelse.Sotheverysamepurchase,justtargetedtowardyourselfortargetedtowardsomebodyelse.Whatdidwefindwhenwecalledthembackattheendoftheday?
Peoplewhospentmoneyonotherpeoplegothappier.Peoplewhospentmoneyonthemselves,nothinghappened.Itdidn'tmakethemlesshappy,itjustdidn'tdomuchforthem.Andtheotherthingwesawistheamountofmoneydoesn'tmatterthatmuch.Sopeoplethoughtthat20dollarswouldbewaybetterthanfivedollars.

They'realsofairlywealthyandaffluentandalltheseothersortsofthings.Wewantedtoseeifthisholdstrueeverywhereintheworldorjustamongwealthycountries.Sowewent,infact,toUgandaandranaverysimilarexperiment.Soimagine,insteadofjustpeopleinCanada,wesaid,"Namethelasttimeyouspentmoneyonyourselforotherpeople.

Idrovetothemallinmycar,boughtapresent,gaveittomymom."Perfectlynicethingtodo.It'sgoodtogetgiftsforpeoplethatyouknow.ComparethattothiswomanfromUganda."Iwaswalkingandmetalong-timefriendwhosesonwassickwithmalaria.Theyhadnomoney,theywenttoaclinicandIgaveherthismoney."
