Whiletheabilitytoself-regulatehaslongbeenconsideredanessentialpartofachild’shealthyemotionaldevelopment,self-regulationisincreasinglybeingseenasagoodpredictorofachild’sacademicsuccess.AccordingtoDrMcClelland,anumberofstudieshavefoundthatself-regulationsignificantlypredictsliteracyoutcomesinchildren.Intheirresearch,McClellandandPonitzfoundthataspectsofself-regulationnotonlypredictedliteracyoutcomesinpreschoolandelementaryschool,butalsopredictedthegainsinliteracychildrenmadeduringthattime.
Goodself-regulationskillsarealsoimportantforachild’ssocialdevelopment.“Self-regulationhelpschildrensucceedinclassroomcontexts,”McClellandsays.“Thechildrenwhocansuccessfullyhandletheselearningenvironmentshavebetterrelationshipswiththeirteachers,aremorelikedbytheirclassmates,anddobetteracademically.Theyarealsomoremotivatedtoachievebecauseoftheseskills.”
