WhenIreadabookfrommymother’sshelves,it’snotunusualtocomeacrossagapinthetext.Aparagraph,ormaybejustasentence,hasbeenslicedout,leavingawindowinitsplace,withwordsfromthenextpagepeepingthrough.Thechoppeduppagelookslikeanearlycompletejigsawpuzzlewaitingforitsmissingpiece.Butthepieceisn’tlost,andIalwaysknowwheretofindit.Dozensofquotations,clippedfromnewspapers,magazines—andbooks—plasteronewallofmymother’skitchen.Whatmeansthemosttomymotherinherbookssheexcisesanddisplays.
I’venevertoldher,butthoseliteraryamputationsappallme.IknowAnnPatchettandDorothySayers,andSomersetMaughamwouldfumealongsideme,theircarefulproseseveredfromitsrightfulplace.Shepicksextractsthatstartleme,too:
“Putyourworstfootforward,becausethenifpeoplecanstillstandyou,youcanbeyourself.”SometimesIstandreadingthewallofquotations,holdingascissors-victimnovelinmyhand,puzzlingoverwhatdrawsmymothertotheseparticularwords.
Myownquotationcollectionismorehiddenanddelicate.Icopyfavoritelinesintoaspiral-boundjournal-aChristmaspresentfrommymother,actually—insoft,grayNo.2pencil.Thismeansmybooksremainwhole.Thelaborrequiredmakesselectionacutthroatprocess:
DoIreallylovethesetwopagesofOnChesilBeachenoughtotranscribethem,wordbyfinger-crampingword?
(Theanswerwasyes,thepageswerethatexquisite.)
)
Mymotherdoesn’tknowanyofthis.Shedoesn’tknowIprefercopyingouttocuttingout.I’venevertoldherthatIcompilequotationsatall.
There’snothingveryshockingaboutthat;forallourchatting,wedon’thavethewordstobegincertainconversations.MymotherandItalkonthephoneatleastonceaweek,andinsomeways,weareeachother’smostdedicatedlistener.ShetellsmeaboutteachingEnglishtotheleatheryRussianladiesatthelibrarywhereshevolunteers;Itellheraboutjobapplications,coverletters,andagrantI’dliketowin.Wetalkaboutmysiblings,hersiblings,thepresident,andPhilipSeymourHoffmanmovies.WemakeeachotherlaughsohardthatIchokeandshecries.Butwhatwedon’tsaycouldfilluprooms.Fightswithmyfather.Smallfailuresinschool.Anything,really,thatpiercesus.
Iliketosaythatmymotherhasnevertoldme“Iloveyou.”There’ssomethingreassuringinitsself-pityingsimplicity—asifthethree-wordabsenceexplainswhoIamandwinsmesympathy-soIcarryitwithme,likealabelonmyback.Isynthesizeourcumbersomerelationshipwithaneasyshorthand:
mymotherneversaid“Iloveyou”.Thelasttimemymotheralmostspokethewordswastwoyearsago,whenshecalledtotellmethatafriendhadbeenhospitalized.
Isaid,“Iloveyou,Mom.”Shesaid,“Thankyou.”Ihaven’tsaiditsince,butI’vethoughtaboutit,andI’vewonderedwhymymotherdoesn’t.Acoupleofyearsago,IfoundapoembyRobertHershoncalled“SentimentalMomentorWhyDidtheBaguetteCrosstheRoad?
”thatsuppliedwordsfortheblankspacesItrytounderstandinourconversations:
Don’tfilluponbread.Isayabsent-mindedly.Theservingsherearehuge.Myson,whosehairmayberecedingabit,says:
Didyoureallyjustsaythattome?
Whathedoesn’tknowisthatwhenwe’rewalkingtogether,whenwegettothecurb.Isometimesstarttoreachforhishand.
It’sahumblepoem,smallinscope,notthestuffofepicheartbreak,yetpoignant.Aftercopyingitdowninmyquotationjournal,mywristsmudgingthepencilintoagrayhazeasIwrote,Iopenedane-mailIhadbeguntomymother,andaddedapostscript:
“Thispoemmademethinkofyou,”withthe13linescutandpastedbelow.Mymotherdoesn’treadpoetry—oratleast,shedoesn’ttellmethatshereadspoetry-andIfeltnervousclicking,“Send”.

Writingisnoteasy.Idoiteveryday.
AndIcantellyou,it’squiteachallenge.
But,themoreIdoit,theeasierIgettojustwrite.
Sometimes,that’sthemostdifficultpartstarting.
Whenpeopleaskmeaboutwriting---howtheycanwrite---Ioftensuggesttheybrainstormfirst.
Writingthemainideascollectedtoatopic,usuallyproducessomegreatthings.
Ifthethingsgetorganized,perhapsthroughanoutline,
thenyoucanwritesomethingreallygreat.
MostofthewritingsIdowithspontaneous,Ijuststartwriting.
Ijuststoppedanddone.
ButIalwaysgooverwhatIwroteatleasttwotimes.
ThefirsttimeIgoovermywritingisspell-checktheword,
It’sunacceptabletodeliverapieceofwritingwithmisspellinginit.
Thesecondtime,IactuallyreadwhatIwrotealoud,
andaddthingsthatmayImissed,
itcouldbeaideathatseemsincompleteorsomethingelse.
Ifyouhavethetime,it’sgoodtoputyourwritingdownforalittlewhile,
andreaditagainlater,andtoseehowyoulikeit.
Youmayhavesomethingyouwishtoaddorsubtract.
Ifyouhaveaseriouspapertowrite,
andyouhavecompletedallofthethingsItalkedabout,
thebestthingtodo--beforeyoureturnyourpaper--istohavesomeonetoreadwhatyouwroteandmakecommentsonit.
Thereisnodoubtthatpracticemakesperfect.
oratleastbetter,so,ifyouwanttobeabetterwriterinKoreanorEnglish,
Irecommendthatyouwriteasmuchasyoucan.

OneofmyfavoritequotescomesfromAlfredSouza.Hesaid,"foralongtimeithadseemedtomethatlifewasabouttobegin-reallife.Buttherewasalwayssomeobstacleintheway,sometingtobegottenthroughfirst,someunfinishedbusiness,timestilltobeserved,adebttobepaid.Thenlifewouldbegin.Atlastitdawnedonmethattheseobstaclesweremylife."
