Inthelate1980s,thedevelopmentofwavelettheoryprovidedefficienttoolsformultiresolutionalsignalprocessing,andwavelettransformprovidedfoundbasisforvarioushierarchicalimageencoding.Theresearchofwaveletimagecompressionhasalsoshownthatmanycharacteristicssuchasmultiresolution,multi-qualitycontrolandembeddedcodestreamrequiredinmodernapplicationsallcoincidewiththehierarchicalstructureofwaveletimageencoding.Atgreatercompressionratio,thereconstructionqualityofwaveletimagecompressionismuchbetterthanthatofDCT.Hence,inthenewstillimagecompressionstandardJPEG2000,waveletimageencodingisadoptedasakeyalgorithm[4].Inthedomainofwaveletstillimageencoding,EmbeddedImageCodingUsingZerotreesofWaveletCoefficients(EZW)isoneofthemostefficienttechniques[3,5].
AlthoughEZWisabetterencodingtechnique,itsencodingspeedisverylimited,becausethewaveletcoefficientsarenumerousandthecoefficientstructureisverycomplex[2].Hence,itisnecessarytouseparallelcomputersystemstospeedupthecomputationofencoding[1].ThispaperjustintroducesahighefficientparallelEZWimplementedonaPRAM-CREWmodel.ThecomputationalcomplexityoftheproposedalgorithmisobviouslylowerthanthatofsequentialEZWandmanyotherexistedparallelEZWs.
