I.Introduction
Withthedevelopmentofculturalcommunication,moreandmoreidiomsarewidelyshownupinEnglishmovies,books,newspapers,andreallifecommunication.Consequently,learnerswillundoubtedlyencountermoreandmoreidiomsintheirlearningnotonlyinwrittenformsuchasnovelsandmagazines,butalsoinspokenformlikemoviesandplays.MaybesomelearnersarenotfullyawareoftheimportanceofEnglishidiomstudysothattheoutcomeofidiomtranslationlearningisfarfromsatisfactory.
Furthermore,itisnotedthatEnglishidiomtranslationshouldbenotedthataredifferentfromChineseidiomtranslation,especiallythefour-characteridiomtranslationinbothculturalandpragmaticterms.Forexample,theusersandtheimplicationofidiomsaredifferent.InChinese,aspeakerbeingabletousefour-characteridiomsismostcasesaculturedone,whereasitisnotnecessarythecaseinEnglishtranslation.DifferentcultureimplicationsinChineseandEnglishidiomscanbesaidtothecontributortothedifferenceintheirtranslation.
Intheviewofthedifficultyandthesignificanceofidiomtranslationlearning,aslanguagelearners,whoaresupposedtobuildabridgefortheeasternandwesterncultures,weshouldbecomeawareoftheincreasingsignificanceofidiomtranslationlearning.DueattentionandeffortsshouldbegiventothestudyofEnglishidiomtranslationandmoreworkneedstobedoneintothisspecialfield.Englishlearnersshouldlearnaboutthetranslationandusagesofidiomsaswellastheoriginsoftheseidiomsforthesakeofadequatecommunication.
Thepurposeofthethesis:

1.Definitionofculture
“Cultureconsistsofallthesharedproductsofhumansociety”(Robertson79).Thismeansnotonlysuchmaterialthingsascities,organizationsandschools,butalsonon-materialthingssuchasideas,customs,familypatterns,languages.Puttingitsimply,culturereferstotheentirewayoflifeofasociety,“thewaysofapeople”.
2.Therelationshipbetweenlanguageandculture
Languageisapartofcultureandplaysaveryimportantroleinit.Somesocialscientistsconsideritthekeystoneofculture.Withoutlanguage,theymaintain,culturewouldnotbepossible.Ontheotherhand,languageisinfluencedandshapedbyculture;itreflectsculture.Inthebroadestsense,languageisthesymbolicrepresentationofapeople,anditcomprisestheirhistoricalandculturalbackgroundsaswellastheirapproachtolifeandtheirwaysoflivingandthinking.
Socialscientiststellusthatculturesaredifferentfromoneanother,thateachcultureisunique.Asculturesarediverse,solanguagesarediverse.Itisonlynaturalthenthatwithdifferenceinculturesanddifferencesinlanguages,difficultiesoftenariseincommunicatingbetweenculturesandacrosscultures.Understandingisnotalwayseasy.

B.FeaturesofEnglishidioms
1.Definitionofidioms
Theword“idiom”itselfisofGreekorigin(idioma),meaning“peculiarity”or“speciality”.Generallyspeakingidiomscoversetphrasesandshortsentences,whicharepeculiartothelanguageinquestionandloadedwiththenativeculturesandideas.Inmostcases,themeaningofidiomaticexpressionscannotbededucedfromtheliteraldefinitionsandthearrangementofitsparts,butrefersinsteadtoafigurativemeaningthatisknownonlythroughconventionaluse.Strictlyspeaking,idiomsareexpressionsthatarenotreadilyunderstandablefromtheirliteralmeaningsofindividualelements;inabroadsense,idiomsmayincludecolloquialisms,catchphrases,slangexpressions,proverbs,etc.(LiYuping3).
2.ThecommonfeaturesofEnglishidioms
Idiomisdefinedasanexpressionthatdoesnotmeanwhatitliterallysays.Hence,itsmeaningisoftenquitedifferentfromtheword-for-wordtranslation.Themeaningidiomconveyisnon-compositional.Itimpliesthatyoucannotunderstandthewholephrasebyjustputtingthemeaningsofeachwordtogether.Ifyoulookattheindividualwords,itmaynotevenmakesensegrammatically,soidiomhasthemeaningonlyasaunit.Theyare,infact,fixedphrasesthatcan’tbealtered.

EachIdiomconsistsofmorethanoneword,andeachwordissemanticunity.Thoughthevariouswordswhichmakeuptheidiomhavetheirrespectiveliteralmeanings,intheidiomtheyhavelosttheirindividualmeaning.Theirmeaningsarenotoftenrecognizableinthemeaningofthewholeidiom.Thepartofspeechofeachelementisnolongerimportant.Quiteoftentheidiomfunctionsasoneword.e.g.“tillthecowscomehome”meansforeverortakingalongtime.“Raincatsanddogs”meanstorainheavily.

Thestructureofanidiomistolargeextentunchangeable.
