33PrefaceInordertomeettheminiaturizationrequirementsofportablecommunicationequip-ment,researchershavegivenmuchattentionrecentlytocompactmicrostripanten-nas.Manyrelatedcompactdesignswithbroadbanddual-frequencyoperation,dual-polarizedradiation,circularlypolarizedradiation,andenhancedantennagainhavebeenreported.Manysignificantadvancesinimprovingtheinherentnarrowoperatingbandwidthofmicrostripantennashavebeenpublishedintheopenliteraturesince1997.Byusingpresentlyavailabletechniques,onecaneasilyachieveanimpedancebandwidth(1:
2voltagestandingwaveratio)oflargerthan25%foraprobe-fedsingle-patchmicrostripantenna.Otherfeedingmethodssuchastheuseofanaperture-coupledfeed,acapacitivelycoupledfeed,orathree-dimensionalmicrostriptran-sitionfeedcanyieldimpedancebandwidthsgreaterthan40%withgoodradiationcharacteristicsforasingle-patchmicrostripantenna.Inaddition,variousdesignsforachievingbroadbandcircularlypolarizedradiation,broadbanddual-frequencyopera-tion,andbroadbanddual-polarizedradiationhavebeendemonstrated.Takingbroad-bandcircularlypolarizedradiationasanexample,somerecentlyreporteddesignsexhibita3-dBaxial-ratiobandwidthgreaterthan40%forasingle-patchmicrostripantenna.Since1997,theauthorandhisgraduatestudentsatNationalSunYat-SenUniversity,Kaohsiung,Taiwan,havepublishedmorethan100refereedjournalpapersonthesubjectofcompactandbroadbandmicrostripantennas.Theseresultsalongwithmanyotheradvanceddesignsreportedrecentlybyantennaresearchersarescat-teredinmanytechnicaljournals,anditistheintentionofthisbooktoorganizetheseadvanceddesignsintheareasofcompactandbroadbandmicrostripantennas.Themicrostripantennadesignscoveredinthisbookaredividedintotwogroups:
