1.Actionstobetakenbeforeandafterthetrialofmainengineforthedutyengineer;
Wheninstructionshavebeenreceivedthatthemainengineistobepreparedforrunningthefollowingprocedureshouldbefollowed:
(1).Checkthatthefuel,lubricatingoilandcoolingwaterareatworkinglevelanddrainanywaterorsludgefromalllubricatingoilandfueltanks.
(2).Checkthatallvalvesinthevarioussystemsareoperationalandcheckthejacketwaterandlubricatingpumps.Anyleakstoberectifiedimmediately.
(3).Startupjacketwaterpumpsandcheckpressures.Bringintooperationtheeatingsystemofthecoolingwater.
(4).Startuplubricatingoilpumpsandcheckthatatworkingpressure.
(5).Checkthatthelevelofoilintheturbochargersiscorrect.
(6).Ensurethatstartingandcontrolairvalvesarecutoffandengagetheturninggear.
(7).Pumpupthestartingairreservoirstotheirmaximumpressureanddraintheairreservoirsandairsystem.
(8).Allandoil-andgrease-lubricatedbearingmustbecheckedtoseethattheirlubricationiscorrect.Thecontrollinkageiswelllubricatedandeasilyoperated.
(9).Checktheengine-roomtelegraphforproperfunctioningandatthesametimecheckthetelephonestothebridgeandChiefEngineer'soffice.
(10).Checkandifnecessary,adjustoil,waterandfuelpressureandtemperatures.
2.Talkaboutthedockrepair.
Inordertokeepshipsingoodconditionsandbemoreavailableforsailing,itisessentialtocarryoutdockrepairperiodically.Atfirst,weshoulddosomepreparingworkfordockrepair.Forexample,weshouldmaketherepairlistinadvance.Vesselshouldmaketheordersomeimportantstoresandsparepartsneededduringdockrepair.Secondly,duringperiodofdockrepair,therealwaysbesuchmainitems:
brushingpropeller,repackingandrefittingvalves,drawingouttailshaftforinspection,openingupandcleaningandgrindinginseavalvesandseaconnectionvalvesandsoon.Afterdockrepair,weshouldcheckthequalityandtoseewhethertheseitemsmetourrequirementsornot,atlastweshouldaccepttheproject.

Beforearrivingataport,someactionsmustbedoneinadvancetomeettherequirementsinourenginedepartment.Usuallythechiefengineermustbeintheenginecontrolroom.Thedutypersonnelmustpreparethefuelchangingoverfromheavyfueltodieseloil;thestatingairreceiversmustbepumpeduptotheirmaximumallowablepressuretobereadyforthemaneuveringconditions.Theoily-waterseparatorandfreshwatergeneratorarepreparedtobestopped.Startanotheralternatororalternatorforsufficientpowersupply.Somecontrolmodesmustbechangedoverformautomaticpositionstomanualones.Checktheauxiliaryblowerforsupplyingfreshairwhenlowenginespeed.Checkthepowersupplyanddeckcranesiftheyareneededforloadingorunloading.

Therearesevenpeopleinourenginedepartment.Libin,ourchiefengineer,wasbornin1963inasuburbantowninShanghai.HegraduatedfromShanghaimaritimeUniversityin1988withabachelor’sdegreeinmarineengineering.Zhangming,oursecondengineer,wasbornin1978omDalian.HegraduatedfromDalianMaritimeUniversityin1995withabachelor’sdegreeinmarineengineering.Wangtao,ourthirdengineer,wasbornin1981inZhejiang.HegraduatedfromJimeiUniversityin1998withabachelor’sdegreeinmarineengineering.IamthefourthengineerandIwasbornin1984inShanghai.IgraduatedfromShanghaimaritimeUniversityin2004.Thereare3motormeninourdepartment,Cailin,GaomingandLiming.Weallworkhardtokeepourengineroomcleanandtidy.Wearestandingtogetherregardlessofsituations.
7.Pleasetalkaboutadamagesurveyonboardyouship.

Engineroompreparationsforcollisionareasfollow:
thechiefengineershouldgototheengineroomquicklyandcommandotherdutypersonneltoprepareformaneuveringthemainengine;reducethespeedofthemainenginewhiletheshipisinshallowwaterandaskforinformationfromthebridgefrequently;changethelow-levelseachesttoahighone;soundrelevanttanks.
10.Talkabouttheequipmentinengineroom.
Thereareallkindsofequipmentinatypicalengineroom,suchasthemainengine,theauxiliaryengine,theboiler,thefreshwatergenerator,theincinerator,theoilywaterseparator,allkindsofpumpsandsoon.
Themainengineisthemostimportantofalltheequipment.Itisusuallyatwo-strokelowspeeddieselengine.Theauxiliaryenginesareusedtodrivethealternators.Theyareusuallyfour-stroketrunkpistonengines.Thesteamonboardisproducedbytheboiler.Therearetwowatergeneratorproducesfreshwaterbyevaporationofseawater.Itcanalsobecalledan‘evaporator’or‘distiller’.Avacuumboilingevaporatorconsistsofanevaporatingsectionandacondensingsection.Theincineratorandtheoilywaterseparatorarepollutionpreventionequipmentintheengineroom.

(5).Checkthelevelsandconditionofthefuelsystem.
(6).Conditionandmodeofoperationofthevariousmainandauxiliarysystems,includingtheelectricalpowerdistributionsystem.
(7).Isthereanyspecialrequirementsrelatingtosanitarysystemdisposals?
(8).Checktheconditionandmodeofoperationofthevariousmainandauxiliarysystems,includingtheelectricalpowerdistributionsystem.
(9).Isthereanypotentiallyadverseconditionsresultingfrombadweather,ice,orcontaminatedorsallowwater?
(10).Checkthestateofcompletionofengine-roomlog.
12.Actionstobetakenwhenablackoutoccursintheengineroom.
Therearetworeasonsforblackout.Thefirstonerelatestothegenerator,thesecondrelatestotheprimemover.Inthefirstcase,thestandbydieselgeneratorshouldstartautomatically.Ifthesecondoccurs,thefollowingproceduresshallbetaken:
(1).Bridgebeinginformed
(2).Thestand-byGeneratorshallupautomatically
(3).AsthevisibilityintheE/Randaccommodationdecreasecasemustbetakentoavoidfallingfromaheightorbumpingagainstobjects.
