Gramophonesandrecordplayers
Gramophonesweresimilartothephonographs,buttheyusedflatvinyl(乙烯基)disksandnotcylinderstoholdthemusic.Thediskswentround,andfirstasteelneedle,thenlaterasmalldiamond,“took”themusicofftherecord.Someofthediskscouldplayformorethan20minutesperside.Todaysomemusicloverswhoarecrazyaboutdisksstillusevinylrecords.

CassettesandtheWalkman
Inthe1960s,thefirstcassetterecordersbecamepopular.Abigsteptowardsmoderntechnologywastheinventionofthefirstportable(便携式的)cassetteplayer,the“Walkman”,bytheJapanesecompany,Sonyin1979.Forthefirsttime,peoplecouldlistentotheirfavouritemusicwhiletheyweretravelling,doingsports,orgoingforwalks.
