Abstract:
Cooperativelearningisaninstructionaltheoryandstrategyadoptedbyanumberofcountriesintheworld.Itisaformofgroupcooperation.IthasalonghistoryandisoneoftheeducationaltheorieswhicharesuitableforthepresentEnglishCurriculumStandards.However,Students’thinkingandskillsarerestrictedbythetraditionalsingleformofteaching.Inthelongrun,thetraditionalteachingmethodisnotadaptedtotheneedanddemandofjuniorEnglishteaching.Itisnotgoodforstudents’communications,anditalsocanreducesomestudents’interests.MostofstudentswilllosetheirinterestsinlearningEnglish.ThisthesisrepresentshowcooperativelearningappliesinEnglishclassrooms,anditalsopointsoutsomedeficienciesandsuggestionsofcooperativelearninginEnglishclassrooms.Intheauthor’sopinion,cooperativelearningcannotonlyimprovetheatmosphereoftheclassrooms,butalsostimulatethestudents’interestsinEnglish.Itcanimprovestudents’academicperformance.Itisalsoconducivetobuildtheharmoniousinterpersonalrelationship.

Languageistheimportanttoolforcommunication,andEnglishisanimportanttoolfortoday’sinternationalcommunication.Asweknow,welearnalanguageinordertocommunicate.However,intheprocessoflanguagelearning,noonecouldfinishthecommunicativetasksbythemselves.Soweneedtocooperateandcommunicatewithothers.Cooperativelearningisaveryeffectiveteachingpattern.Nowadays,asaneffectivesystemofteachingtheoryandstrategicsystem,cooperativelearningisbeinghighlypraisedinmanycountries.Guskey(1971),aprofessorofAmericanKentuckyUniversity,oncemarked,“substantially,cooperativelearningisateachingmode,whichdemandsstudentstolearntogetherinsomeheterogeneousgroups.Thegroupsarecomposedoftwotosixpersons.Italsoclaimsthatstudentsshouldcompletethetasksthattheteacherassigned.Eachgroupstudentsshouldtakepartinallkindsofcooperativelearningactivities.”Inourcountry,cooperativelearningisanoldidea.Therewasarecordintheclassicaleducationalbookover2000yearsago,whichstressedoncooperationofthelearningprocess.Inthemiddleofthe1990s,ithasmadeconsiderableprogress.Formorethan20years,Chineseresearchershavemadeaseriesofstudiesandexperimentsincooperativelearningandteaching.
Inourcountry,coursereformadvocatesthechangeoflearningstyle.Itencouragescooperativelearning,discoverylearningandautonomouslearningamongthestudents.Comparedwithtraditionalteachingmode,studentsincooperativelearningaresupposedtotalkandlistentooneanotherinsteadoflisteningsolelytotheteacher.Itrequiresthateachstudentshouldparticipateactivelyintheclass.Theycouldhelpeachothercopewithsomeproblems.Theyshouldpursuecooperationthroughmutualhelp.Throughtheeffectivecooperativelearning,teachersandstudentschangetheirrolesintheclass.Teachersbecometheguidanceandparticipantsintheteachingprocess.Andstudentsbecomethemasterofclassroomlearning.Inthisway,studentsandteacherssharetheirexperienceandthinkingintheclass.Andtheycancommunicatewithanyone.Theycanexpresstheiropinionstoeveryone.Cooperativelearningletsusunderstandingtheessenceofteaching.Itreducestheburdenofteachersandstudents.Italsoarousestheenthusiasmofstudents.
Cooperativelearningstrategiescannotonlyimprovestudents’participationinclassactivities,butalsopromotetheirinterestsinEnglishlearning.Itplaysanimportantroleinarousingclassroomstudyatmosphere.InordertohelpChinesejuniorschoolstudentstoimprovetheirEnglish,itisnecessaryforustodiscusshowtoapplycooperativelearninginEnglishclass.

Ⅱ.TheTheoreticalBasisofCooperativeLearninginEnglishClassroom
Cooperationisanimportantdrivingforceforthesurvivalanddevelopmentofhumansociety.Withthedevelopmentofscienceandtechnology,cooperativeconsciousnessandcooperativeabilityhavebecomeanimportantqualityofhumansurvivalanddevelopment.Asoneofthethreelearningwayswhichissparkedplugbynewclass,cooperativelearningappearsinclassteachingwiththefastestspeedandbecomesanimportantstandardtoevaluateaclass.
2.1.TheConnotationofCooperativeLearninginEnglishClassroom
Cooperativelearningcanbemainlydividedintofourdifferentaspects:
teacher-studentinteraction,teacher-teacherinteraction,student-studentinteractionandfacultyinteraction.Manyscholarshavetheirownopinionsaboutthedefinitionofcooperativelearning.Forexample,D.W.JohnsonandR.T.Johnson(1990)arguesthatcooperativelearningisawayofstudythatadoptsgroupsintheclasstomakestudentscarryoutlearningactivitiestogetherandtomaximizetheimprovementoftheirownlearningandothers’learning.AndChinesefamousscholarWangTan(2001)thinksthatcooperativelearningisakindofteachingstrategythataimstocontributetostudents’mutualcooperationinheterogeneousgroupssothattheycanreachcommonlearninggoals,andteachersgivestudentsrewardsaccordingtothegroup’soverallperformance.Althoughdomesticandoverseasscholars’studiesofthecooperationhavedifferentdefinitions,wecanalsosummarizethesamecharacteristicsofcooperativelearningasfollows:
thebasicgoalofcooperativelearningistoformstudents’cognitiveandaffectiveteachingstrategysystem;
thebasicformoforganizationisheterogeneouslearninggroup;
teachersaretheorganizerandcoordinatorintheprocessofcooperation.
Atpresent,asanimportantteachingstrategy,cooperativelearninghasthecharacteristicsofopenteachingmode,democraticatmosphere,andall-roundabilitytraining.ThisteachingstrategyiswidelyusedbyalotofEuropeancountries.Moreandmorescholarsnoticeitsimportance.Inordertoenhancemanystudents’achievementandpromotestudents’interests,alotofexpertsholdthatEnglishteachingshouldbeconductedinacertaincontext.Becauseofthedifferentcontextsexpressdifferentmeanings.Inclass,astheinstructor,theteachershouldgivesometimetoletstudent-studentinteractionandteacher-studentinteraction.TheinteractionofcooperativelearninginEnglishclassroombreaksthetraditionalmode.Itarousesstudents’enthusiasminstudy.
2.2.TheTeachingPrincipleofCooperativeLearning
Oneofthegoalsofthecooperativelearningistodevelopthecompetenceofcommunication,andthelanguageisthenecessarytooltoachievethecommunication.Therefore,thereisaninevitablerelationbetweencooperativelearningandlanguageteaching.InordertoapplycooperativelearningmethodinEnglishclassofjuniorschools,teachersandstudentsshouldfollowthecertainprinciples.Firstly,theteachershouldobservethepracticalprinciple.InEnglishteaching,teachersshouldbearadicaldeparturefortheirstudents.Theyshoulddesigntheobjectivesofcooperativelearningcarefully.Secondly,studentsandteachersshouldobeythegradualprinciple.Itrequiresthatteachersandstudentsshouldbepatient.Gainingknowledgeisnotveryeasy.Theprocessshouldberegular.Donotbenervousanddisappointed.Thirdly,studentsandteachersshouldobservetheeclecticprinciple.Itrequiresstudentsandteachersdonotgotoextremes.Theyshouldtrusteachotherwhentheycommunicate.Theyshouldbeeagertohelpeachother.Iftheyobservethoseprinciples,theywillgetgreatharvest.
Withthenewcurriculumreformsbeingcarriedoutcontinuously,cooperativelearningactivitiesappearinmanyjuniorschoolsinChina.Asweknow,cooperativelearningnotjustrequiresstudentstoparticipateactivelyinclass.Italsodemandsstudentstocultivategoodqualityinstudy.Cooperativelearningcannotonlyimprovetheeffectofclassroomteaching,butalsoarousesstudents’enthusiasm.Itmakesstudentstoconsolidateandenhancetheknowledge.Manystudentsneedaplatformtodisplayandstrengthentheirknowledge.Thatistosaymanystudentsneedtocommunicateandcooperatewithothers.Theyneedsometimeandchancestoestablishtheirknowledgestructure.Cooperativelearningcanprovidesomestudents’opportunitiestogrowinself-confidenceandperseverance.Itcanimprovestudents’skillsandthinkingabilities.ItalsocandeveloptheirimaginationandcreativityinEnglishclassroom.What’smore,itcultivatesthestu
