1.Firstofall,ateacherisrequiredtobeproficientintheEnglishlanguage.He/sheneedstobeexcellentinlistening,speaking,readingandwriting.Theimportanceofbeingagoodlanguageuserinvolvesfourpoints.First,alanguageteacherisamodalforstudentstoimitate,tofollowandtolearnfromeitherconsciouslyorsubconsciously.Subconsciouslearningplaysaveryimportantroleinstudents’acquisitionofthelanguage.Second,agoodcommandofEnglishendowsateacherwithconfidence.Ateacher’sconfidencepositivelyaffectshisorherspeakingandteachingperformanceandconsequentlyinfectshisorherstudentswhomayrespondwithfeelingsofcertainty,respectandalsoconfidence.Fromthisemergesthethirdpoint.AteachercanattractstudentsimmediatelywithhisorhergoodEnglish.Whenadmirationisestablished,studentstendtobelieveintheteacher,cooperatewiththeteacher,andbehavewellinclassactivities.ThelastpointisthatgoodEnglishempowerstheteachertomanageclasswell,trynewmethodsandadapthisorherteachingatanytime.
2.Beinganeffectivelanguageanalystmeansnotonlytheteacherpossessestheknowledgeaboutthelanguagebutalsohelpstudentsstudythenatureofthelanguagewithlearningeffects.BeinganeffectivelanguageanalystalsomeansbeingabletoconceptualizelanguagephenomenaasEnglishisrich,complexanddiverse(Wright1991).Nogrammarbooksordictionariescanincludealllanguagephenomena.Sotheteacherisrequiredtotheorizethelanguageexperience.
3.Theabilitytounderstandstudents’feelingsandproblemscandecidetheteacher’sattitudestowardstudentsandbuilduprapportwithhis/herstudents.Consideringstudents’feelingsbyputtinghim/herselfinstudents’placehelpsunderstandandappreciatestudents’difficultiesandfeelings.
4.Agoodteachertriestoenablestudentstodotheirself-discoveryandself-exploration.Toenablestudentsalsoreferstofacilitatestudents’personalitydevelopmentandsocialabilities.Ateacher’sworkinvolvesstudentswhoarethefutureofthesociety.Asateacher,he/sheisresponsibletoeducateanddevelopeachindividuallearnerasawholepersoninequippingthemwithqualitiesofcooperation,justice,responsibilityanddiscipline,andwithabilitiesofbeingcriticalandjudgmentalindealingwiththeircomplexlife.
5.Ateacher’sjobistoguideandhelpstudentslearnefficiently.Theefficiencyliesnotonlyinbeinggoodatknowledgeofandaboutthelanguagebutalsoinhis/herwaysormethodsemployedtoachieveadesiredpurpose.Inotherwords,inordertoachieveapurposesuchasmotivatingstudents,dealingwithalanguagepoint,orimprovingreadingability,theteacherneedstotrydifferentwaystoreachthatpurpose.Thisiscalledmeansandendsrelationship(Dewey1933).Meansarevariousalternativesorsuggestions;endsarethedesiredpurposes.Inordertoreachdesiredaims,theteacherneedstomakeeffortstoexploreandemploydifferentmeans.
