Teachers’questioningisanimportantmeansinEFLclassroomteaching.Itplaysaverysignificantroleinthepopularteachingmode.Itisthebasisofclassroominteractionandteachersshouldgropeforalongtimetomasterit.Itisbothanimportantpartofclassroomteachingandaneffectivewayoflearningsecondlanguage.Teachers’questioningisaveryimportantfactorofEFLclassroomteaching.Insecondlanguageclassrooms,wherelearnersoftendon’thaveagreatnumberoftools,teachers’questionsprovidenecessarysteppingstonestocommunication.Questionscannotonlyinvolvestudentsintocommunication,butalsoencouragestudentstomendtheirlanguage.ItisimportanttoprovideEnglishteacherswithsomeusefulsuggestionstostrengthenthewayofquestioning.EffectiveEnglishteachingneedsproperclassroomquestioning.Therefore,improvingEnglishteachers’waysofclassroomquestioningistheneedofEnglishteachers’professionaldevelopmentandtherequirementofnewcurriculumreform.
Inrecentyears,alotofresearchershavealreadyreachedanagreementthattheclassroomisavaluableplacetolookat,fortheclassroomisaveryimportantplatformforsecondandforeignlanguagestudents.AsanimportantpartoftheEnglishclassroom,questioningplaysanimportantroletorichtheclassenvironmentandtoorganizethecourses.
I.TheNecessityofEFLClassroomQuestioning
Questioningisregardedasoneofthemostimportantandbasicteachingtechniques.Infactclassroomquestionsarerecommendationsofteaching.Questioningisarelativelycomplicatedteachingskillofalltheteachingtechnique.Questioningiscloselyrelatedtoteaching.Alotofscholarsathomeandabroadhavemaderesearchonthedefinitionofclassquestioning.TheyfoundthatquestioningisoneofthemostnecessaryfactorsinEFLclassroom.Studyshowsthateachteacherneedsquestionstomanageherorhisclass.SometeachersusemorethanhalfoftheclasstimetoexchangequestionsandanswersinsomeEFLclassrooms.Theythinkcommunicationismoreimportantthanteachingonly.Andtheycanfindhowthestudentsmasterandunderstandaboutthelessonthroughthequestioning.Inclassroomsettings,teacherquestioningisdefinedasinstructionalmethods,thatconveytostudentsthecontenttobelearnedandguidanceforwhattheyaretodo,andhowtheyaretodoit.Questioningisanimportantaidthatcansetagoodlesson,andtheteacher’squestioningtechniquescandeterminethesuccessofstudentsinansweringthequestions.
1.1TheReasonsforClassroomQuestioning
AtpresentinChina,moststudentslearnEnglishfromtheirschoolEnglishteachersinEFLclassrooms.SoinEFLclassroom,theimportanceofclassroominteractionisteachersandstudentsthemselves.Andaskinggoodquestionscultivatesinteractionbetweenteachersandtheirstudents.Teachersmustbesurethattheyhaveaclearpurposefortheirquestionsratherthanjustdeterminingwhatknowledgeisknown.Ifateacherdoesnotaskquestionsintheclass,heorshewillnotreallymasterthestudents’realability.Youdonotknowthatifthelessonyouhadyesterdayisunderstoodbythem.
“Learningisanoutgrowthofthequestionsthatstudentsareaskedandthebetterateacher’squestions,thebetterateacher’steachingandaclass’slearning”(Dillon,1988:
ix).Teachersknowthatclassroomquestioningisoneofthemostpowerfulandfamiliartools.Teacherquestioningcanbeprovidedwithaseriesofreasons.Itcandevelopstudents’interestandhelpstudentstobeactivelyparticipateinclasses,foreknowledgestudents’preparation,checkontheirhomework,reviewandsummarizethepreviouslessons,andmanagetheclassroom.Itcancreatesituation,getthroughstudents’channelandofferspaceforthinking.Whentheteachersetasuspension,arousethinkingandenlightenthemindsofstudents,theirmindwillbeactivelyandpositivelyintheprocessofexploration.Andatthesametime,iftheteachercanaddsomestudents’questioning,itcanmotivatestudents’questioningandansweringoreventheteachersownquestioningandanswering,itcanmotivatestudents’activethinking.Theeffectwillbebetterthantheteacher’sgeneralstatement.
1.2TheRoleofClassroomQuestioning
Questioningisdefinedasoneofthemosteffectiveteachingmethods.Classroomquestioningcaninspirestudents’thinking.Itcangivefullplaytotheroleoftheteacher’sleading.Englishteachingstartsfromthequestionsanddevelopswithmorequestions.So,itisnotonlyakindofimportantteachingskills,butalsotheimportantwaytotrainstudent’sinnovationability.
InChina,languageenvironmentislimitedforEnglishlearners,especiallyforstudentsofmiddleschool;
teachers’languageisthemostimportantchannelforEnglishlearners.TheschoolclassroomsbecometheonlyplacetouseEnglishforEnglishlearners.Itcanevaluatestudents’preparationandcheckontheirhomeworkorseatworkcompletion;
itcandevelopstudents’criticalthinkingskillsandinquiringattitudes;
itcantrainstudents’insights;
itcanevaluateachievementofinstructionalgoalsandobjectives;
itcanencouragestudentstostudyindependently;
itcanconsolidateafact.QuestioningisregardedasanimportantprocesswhichaimstoinvolvestudentsintheEFLclassroomandeducethoughtfulanswers.Becauseoftherole,questioningishelpfulforEnglishteacherstofindeffectivewaystoimprovetheuseofquestions,anditisalsoveryimportantforustoconductresearchintothisphenomenon.
Nomatterwhatsubjectsyouhave,questioningisstilloneofthenecessaryfactorsintheclassroom.AndEnglishasaforeignlanguagetolearninChina,questioningismoreimportantthanothers.Inordertoanswertheteacher’squestionsaccurately,studentshavetofocustheirattention,quickentheirmind,fastprocessinformationandactiveexploretheanswerstothequestions.TheteachercanfinallyachievehisgoalofarouseinterestinEnglishlearning.
II.TheCurrentSituationofEFLClassroomQuestioning
Questioningisanimportantpartforteachers-studentsandstudents-studentstocommunicate.Anditiseventhecoreofeffectiveteaching.Whenstudentsjointheteachers’questioning,teachersmustgivefeedbackintime,andthefeedbackmustbebasedonthepositiverules.However,therearealotofproblemsinEnglishclassroomquestioning.ForexampleteachersusedtouseChinesetoaskquestionssothatstudentscaneasilyknowthemeaning.Butitisnotagoodwaytopracticestudents’listeningandEnglishthinking.Andsometeachersbecauseoflackingofpreparingbeforetheclass,thequestionsheorsheasksarejustsomesimpleones.Thiskindofquestionsisnotinfavorofstudentsrecallingtheknowledgetheylearnedyesterday.Bothteachersandstudentsaremuddledthroughtheirworkonthequestioningandanswering.Lackingoffeedbackfromteachersisanothersituation.Nomattertheanswergivenbythestudentisrightorwrong,teachersshouldgivefeedbackontime.Ifheorsheisright,givingheorshesomepraising.Andifwrong,givingsomeencouragement,andcorrecttheanswer.Regardingquestioningasakindofpunishmentisnotagoodmannerforateacherandignoringthelowscorestudentscannotshowthefairnessofateacher.
2.1CommonQuestioninChinese
ChineseisthemothertonguefortheEnglishlearnersinChina.AndthethinkingstyleofthestudentsisChinese,too.However,someEnglishteachersusedtouseChinesetoaskquestions.Itmakesstudents‘thinkingconfinetoChinesethinking.Thatisbothnotconducivetobroadenstudents’thinkinginEnglishcultureandnotpracticeEnglishspeakingandlisteninginEnglishclass.Atpresent,mostoftheEnglishlearnersarenotsatisfiedwiththeEnglisheducationtheyarereceivingfromtheirownschoolEnglishteachers.AsanimportantteachingmethodofEFLclassroominteraction,teacherquestioningisaparttheyarecomplainingabout.StudiesofteacherquestioninginEFLclassroomwillmeetthelearners’requestsinaway.Chineseexam-orientededucationmaketeachersandparentsonlycareaboutthescore,butEnglishspeakingandlisteningisanimportantwaytocommunicatewithothers.Chinaisconnectingtothewholeworld,theEnglishscoresareimportant,butmasteringrealEnglishskillsisnecessary.
