OxfordandCambridge–twouniversitiesso
similarthattheyareoftenspokenoftogetheras
“Oxbridge”.They’rebothintheUK,fairlynear
London,andbothregularlycometopinanyrankingof
theworld’sbestuniversities.
Thetwouniversitiesbeganwithinacenturyof
eachother.OxfordUniversity,now900yearsold,
wasfoundedtowardstheendofthe11thcentury.In
1209therewasadisputebetweentheuniversityand
thetownspeopleofOxford.Asaresult,someofthe
Oxfordteachersleftandfoundedauniversityinthe
townofCambridge,some84milesaway.Eversince
then,thetwoinstitutionshavebeenverycompetitive.
Unlikemostmodernuniversities,bothOxford
