KonstantinTsiolkovsky
KonstantinEduardovichTsiolkovsky(1857-1935)wasaRussianphysicistandschoolteacher,regardedasthefatheroftheoreticalastronautics.Heformulatedthemathematicalfundamentalsofmodernastronautics.Heshowedthatspacetravelwaspossibleonlybymeansofrocketpropulsion.
In1903Tsiolkovskyfinishedapaperthatwastobecomehisfamousarticle“InvestigationofOuterSpacebyReactionDevices.”Thisworkrepresentshismajorcontributiontoastronomicalengineering.Hereiteratedhisrocketequationandmodifiedittoincludetheforcesofgravityanddrag.Heexaminedtheenergiesinvolvedinaverticalandhorizontallaunching,andheconsideredthebestoverallshapeforarocket.
RobertGoddard
OnMarch16,1926,hebecamethefirstpersonintheworldtolaunchaliquid-fueledrocket.Itonlymadeashortflight,andobtainedaspeedofabout60milesperhour.WithinafewyearsGoddardwouldbelaunchingrocketsreachingspeedsover500milesperhourandtravelingover2000feet.
