“Wethinkthisisthewaythefutureisgoingtowork,”
saidKyleDickson,co-directorofresearchandthemobilelearninginitiativeatAbileneChristianUniversityinTexas,whichhasboughtmorethan600iPhonesand300iPodsforstudentsenteringthisfall.
Althoughplentyofstudentstaketheirlaptopstoclass,theydon’ttakethemeverywhereandwouldprefersomethinglighter.AbileneChristiansettledonthedevicesaftersurveyingstudentsandfindingthattheydidnotlikehaulingaroundtheirlaptops,butthatmostofthemalwayscarriedacellphone,Dr.Dicksonsaid.
ItisnotclearhowmanycollegesanduniversitiesplantogiveoutiPhonesandiPodsthisfall;
officialsatApplewereunwillingtotalkaboutthesubjectandsaidthattheywouldnotleakanyinstitution’splans.
“Wecan’tannounceotherpeople’snews,”saidGregJoswiak,vicepresidentofiPodandiPhonemarketingatApple.Healsosaidthathecouldnotdiscussdiscountstouniversitiesforbulkpurchases.
Atleastfourinstitutions
theUniversityofMaryland,OklahomaChristianUniversity,AbileneChristianandFreed-Hardeman
haveannouncedthattheywillgivethedevicestosomeoralloftheirstudentsthisfall.
Otheruniversitiesareexploringtheiroptions.StanfordUniversityhashiredastudent-runcompanytodesignapplicationslikeacampusmapanddirectoryfortheiPhone.ItisconsideringwhethertoissueiPhonesbutnotsureit,snecessary,notingthatmorethan700iPhoneswereregisteredontheuniversity’snetworklastyear.
AttheMassachusettsInstituteofTechnology,iPhonesmightalreadyhavebeeneverywhere,ifAT&
T,thewirelesscarrierofferingtheiPhoneintheUnitedStates,hadamorereliablenetwork,saidAndrewYu,mobiledevicesplatformprojectmanageratM.I.T.
“Wewouldhaveprobablygoneaheadwiththis,maybejustgettingathousandiPhonesandgivingthemout,”
Mr.Yusaid.
TheUniversityofMarylandatCollegeParkisproceedingcautiously,givingtheiPhoneoriPodTouchto150students,saidJeffreyHuskamp,vicepresidentandchiefinformationofficerattheuniversity.
“Wedon’tthinkthatwehavealltheanswers,”
Mr.Huskampsaid.Byobservinghowstudentsusethegadgets,hesaid,
“We’retryingtogetanswersfromthestudents.”
Ateachcollege,thestudentswhochoosetogetaniPhonemustpayformobilephoneservice.Thoseservicecontractsincludeunlimiteddatause.BoththeiPhonesandtheiPodTouchdevicescanconnecttotheInternetthroughcampuswirelessnetworks.WiththeiPhone,thosenetworksmayprovidefasterconnectionsandlongerbatterylifethanAT&
T’sdatanetwork.ManycellphonesallowuserstosurftheWeb,butonlysomeneweronesarecapableofwirelessconnectiontothelocalareacomputernetwork.
Universityofficialssaythattheyhavenoplanstotracktheirstudents(andApplesaiditwouldnotbepossibleunlessstudentsgivetheirpermission).Theysaythattheyaredrawntotheprospectoflearningapplicationsoutsidetheclassroom,thoughsuchlessonplanshaveyettosurface.
“MycolleaguesandIarestudyingsomethingcalledaugmentedreality(afieldofcomputerresearchdealingwiththecombinationofreal-worldandvirtualreality),”
saidChristopherDede,professorinlearningtechnologiesatHarvardUniversity.
“AlienContact,”
forexample,isanexercisedevelopedformiddle-schoolstudentswhousehand-helddevicesthatcandeterminetheirlocation.Astheywalkaroundaplaygroundorotherarea,text,videooraudiopopsupatvariouspointstohelpthemtrytofigureoutwhyalienswereintheschoolyard.
“Youcanimaginesimilarkindsofinteractiveactivitiesalonghistoricallines,”
likefollowingtheFreedomTrailinBoston,ProfessorDedesaid.“It’simportantthatwedoresearch,sothatweknowhowwellsomethinglikethisworks.”

“IwouldbanthattooifIknewthestudentswereusingitinclass,”ProfessorSummerssaidoftheiPhone,afterthedeviceanditscapabilitieswereexplainedtohim.
“Whatwewanttoencourageinthesestudentsisanactiveintellectualexperience,inwhichtheydevelopthewiderangeofcomplexreasoningabilitiesrequiredofgoodlawyers.”
TheexperienceatDukeUniversitymayeasesomeconcerns.Afewyearsago,DukebegangivingiPodstostudentswiththeideathattheymightusethemtorecordlectures(theseoldermodelscouldnotaccesstheInternet).
“Wehadassumedthatthebiggestfocusofthesedeviceswouldbeconsumingthecontent,”
saidTracyFuthey,vicepresidentforinformationtechnologyandchiefinformationofficeratDuke.
Butthatisnotallthatthestudentsdid.TheybeganusingtheiPodstocreatetheirown
“content,”
makingaudiorecordingsofthemselvesandpresentingthem.Thestudentsturnedwhatcouldhavebeenapassiveinteractionintoanactiveone,Ms.Futheysaid.
