’saidDerek,leaningacrosshisplate.‘Helookssodifferent.’
‘Helookssmart,’saidJaneyfirmly.‘Andabouttime,too.’
ALovelygreencolour
Thelastlessonofthedaywasart.Theyhadtopaintinterestingfaces.Janeywasdoingamonster.Sheputblood–shotbitsinhiseyes,aboltthroughhisneckandgreenstuffcomingoutofhisnose.Shewaspleasedwiththegreenstuff,butshe’dmixeduptoomuch.SheaskedDerekifhewantedsome.
‘Idon’tneedanygreenstuff,Janey,’hesaid.‘I’mdoingafootballer.’
‘Well,hecouldhavegreenstuffcomingoutofhisnose,couldn’the?
’shesaid.
‘No,’saidDerek.‘Hecouldn’t.’
‘Youcoulduseitforthebackground.Likegrass.’
‘I’mnothavingmyfootballerrunningaroundongreenstufffromamonster’snose,thankyou,’saidDerek.
HenudgedJaney’selbow,andgreenstuffspilledoverthedesk.
Hetriedtostopittricklingontothefloor.
Thenhereachedbehindhimandrubbedhishandsonthetowel.Exceptthatitwasn’tthetowel.
‘Oh,’hesaidquietly.‘WhathaveIdone?
’
Janeycouldseewhathadhappened.DerekhadwipedhishandsonMrSuch’snewtrousers.
‘You’vedoneitnow,’shesaid.‘OldBaggy-Pants’llgoupthewallwhenheseesthis.’
MrSuchwasontheothersideoftheroom.Helookedupandsmiledatthem.
‘Areyougettingonallright,youtwo?

‘Yes,thandyou,sir,’saidJaneybrightly.
Shedidn’tdaretellhimthetruth.
Shegrabbedsomepaperandstartedtorubatthegreenmarks.
‘Youdaftclod,’saidDerek,‘you’remakingthemworse.They’retwiceasbignow.’
Theywere.JaneylookedatDerekandthoughthard.
‘There’sonlyonethingforitnow,’shesaid.
‘What’sthat?
‘Putthembackonthehanger.Thenwecancleanthemupafterschool.’
WhenMrSuchcameovertolookattheirpictures,thesuitwasstillswingslightlyonthecupboarddoor.
‘Oh,’hesaid.‘Ilovethatshadeofgreen,Janey.That’salovelycolour.’
AthometimeMrSuchpotteredaroundforagesandwouldnotleavethemontheirown.Theystackedchairsasslowlyaschairshaveeverbeenstacked.Then,atlast,hewanderedofftothestaffroom.
Derekdartedovertothesinkandturnedonthetaps.Janeygrabbedthetrousersandflungthemacrosstheroomathim.Hecaughtthemandplungedthemintthesimk.Hegrabbedaplastcbottleandsquirtedithardatthetrousers.
‘Whatareyoudoing?
’Janeyyelled.
‘Washing-upliquid,’saidDerek.‘That’llgetstainsout.’
‘That’snotwashing-upliquid,Derek.That’sglue.’
AlmostatoncetheyheardMrSuchoutsidethedoor.Hecameinwearinghisanorakandcycleclips.DerekandJaneystoodsidebysideinfrontofthesink.
‘Oh,’saidMrSuch,‘Areyoustillhere?
‘Nearlyfinished,sir,’Janeysaid,andtriedtosmile.
‘Well,itlookstidytome.Ishouldrunoffhomenow.’
Hewentovertothejacketonthecupboarddoor.
‘Don’t,’saidDerek.
‘Don’t,what?
‘Don’t,’takethesuit,’
‘Whyevernot?
‘Because…because…’
‘Becauseyoumightgetitdirty,’Janeysaid.‘It’llbesaferifyouleaveithere.Won’tit,Derek?
Dereknodded.MrSuchlookedpuzzled.Hishandwasstillhalfwaytothejacket.
‘Itmightfalloffyourbike,’Janeyadded.‘Andlandonaheapofrubbishorsomething.’
MrSuchloweredhishand.
‘Well,’hesaid,‘youmightberight.Idon’twantanymoreaccidents.’
Whenhe’dgone,theyputthetrousersinaplasticbagandsmuggledthemofftoDerek’shouse.
Theythrewthetrousersinthekitchensinkandcoveredthemwithhotwaterandwashingpowder.Theyscrubbedthemwithastiffbrush,abarofsoapandawirything.Thewaterfoamedintoapileofbubblesashighastheirelbows.
‘Isitworking?
’Janeyasked.
Derekflappedthebubblesoutofthewayandlookedintothesink.
‘Stillgreen,’hegroaned.
Theysquirtedwashing-upliquid,polishandfloorcleanerinthesink,buttheydidn’tworkeither.
‘Maybeweshouldbashthemaboutlikeawashingmachine,’saidDerek.
SotheyranoutsidandbashedthetrousersupanddownonDerek’sgardenpath.Butthatjustpickedupmoredirt.AndJaneythoughttheywerebeginningtoshrink.
‘There’sonlyonethingforitnow,’shesaid.
‘We’llhavetotakethemtothedry-cleaners.’
Thehero
NextdaywasSaturday.DerekandJaneycaughtthefirstbusintotown.Thetrouserssatontheseatbetweenthem,screweduptightinaplasticbag.Janeycouldhardlybeartolookatthem.
Theywaitedtillthedry–cleanerswasemptyandthenmarchedin.Janeysmiledatthegirlandthegirlsmiledback.
‘Thetrousers,Derek,’Janeysaid.
‘Whataboutthem?
‘Handthemover.’
‘Ican’t.’
‘Whynot?
‘Becauseyou’vegotthem.’
‘NoIhaven’t.Youhave.’
Foramomentortwotheystoodtherestaringateachother.ThenDerekblinkedandsaidinaquietvoice,‘Janey,thye’restillonthebus.’
Threehourslater,tiredandfedup,theyarrievedatthebusstation.Theywalkedupanddowntilltheysawtheirbus.Itwasparkedinacorneroftheyardwithtwofeetstickingoutfromunderit.
‘Excuseme,’Janeysaidtothefeet,‘weleftsomethingonyourbusthismorning,’
Thefeetwriggledoutandamanstoodup,blinking.Hewipedhishandsonanoilyrag.
‘Whatwasit?
’hesaid.
‘Apairoftrousers,’saidDerek.
‘No,’saidtheman.’Ihaven’tseenanytrousersonthisbus.Onlytheonespeoplewerewearing.’
Heshookhisheadandtossedtheoilyragintoabox.Asitsailedthroughtheair,alegunfoldedfromthegrubbybundle.Alegwithgreenstainsonit.
‘Theretheyare!
’Janeycried.
‘Well,well,well,’saidtheman.’Inevernoticedthatbefore.’
Derekfishedthetrousersoutoftheboxontheendofaspanner.Heheldthemuptoexaminethem.
‘Ohdear,’hesaid.‘They’reworsethanever.’Janeysighed.
‘We’llhavetoownup.’
OnMondayDerekandJaneygottoschoolearly.Theyslippedintotheclassroomandtookthetrousersoutofthebag.
TheysawtheoilfromthebusandthedirtfromDerek’sgarden.Theysawtheglueandthegreenpaint.Theylookedateachotherandsighed.
‘Wehavetodoit,’saidJaney.‘Wehavetotellthetruth.’
ThentheyputthetrousersbackothehangerandwentofftolookforMrSuch.
Theyfoundhiminthehall.
‘Janey,Derek,’saidMrSuchwithasmile.‘What’sallthis?
‘It’syoursuit,MrSuchwithasmile.‘What’sallthis?
‘It’syoursuit,MrSuch,’Janeysaidbravely.‘We’vegotsomethingtotellyou.’
Butbeforeshecouldsayanotherword,MrsVennburstintothehallandgrabbedMrSuchbyhisarm.
‘Chips!

’shescreamed.
‘Nothankyou,MrsVenn,’saidMrSuch.‘It’stooearlyinthemorningforchips.’
‘No,no,MrSuch.Thechipsinthekitchen!
They’reonfire!
‘What?
MrSuchhurriedovertothekitchendoorsandpushedthemopen.Acloudofbluesmokerolledintothehall.
‘Myword!
’hesaid,andbackedawayagain.
‘Chucksomewateronit,sir!
’squeakedDerek.
‘Youcan’tdothat,’saidMrSuch.‘Waterwillmakeitworse.Ineedaclothorsomethingtosmothertheflames.’
ThenhesawthesuitdanglingongitshangerfromJaney’sfinger.
‘Ithinkthere’sonlyonethingforit,MrSuch,’saidjaney,andMrSuchgrabbedthesuit.
Ofcoursethesuitwasruined.Itturnedintoamangledmessofsmokeandgrease.JaneytriedtotellMrSuchaboutthegreenstainsandhowtheytriedtocleanthemoff.ButMrSuchdidn’treallylisten.
‘Nevermind,’hekeptsaying.‘Nevermindaboutthat.’
MrSuchwastheheroofthehoursohewasratherpleasedwithhimself.Theheadpromisedhimanotherbrandnewsuitandhewaspleasedwihthat,too.
‘Jollygood,’saidMrSuch,‘Icangetanice,brightwhiteone.’
‘Oh,don’tdothat,’saidJaneyquickly.
‘Well,wethinkgreenwouldsuityoubetter,don’twe,Derek?
‘Muchbetter,’Dereknodded.‘Wethinkgreen’salovelycolour.
