Scientistshavesucceededincopyingthesilk-producinggenesoftheGoldenOrbWeaverspiderandusingthemtocreateasyntheticmaterialwhichtheybelieveisthemodelforanewgenerationofadvancedbio-materials.Thenewmaterial,biosilk,whichhasbeenspunforthefirsttimebyresearchersatDuPont,hasanenormousrangeofpotentialusesinconstructionandmanufacturing.

AtDuPont,researchershaveusedbothyeastandbacteriaashoststogrowtherawmaterial,whichtheyhavespunintofibres.RobertDorsch,Dupont’sdirectorofbiochemicaldevelopment,saystheglobulesofprotein,comparablewithmarblesinanegg,areharvestedandprocessed.“Webreakopenthebacteria,separateouttheglobulesofproteinandusethemastherowstartingmaterial.Withyeast,thegenesystemcanbedesignedsothatthematerialexcretestheproteinoutsidetheyeastforbetteraccess,”hesays.

Inthe19thcentury,anAmericanacademic,Newman,characterisedauniversityas:

Newmanarguedthatifuniversitieswerenotforteachingbutratherforscientificdiscovery,thentheywouldnotneedstudents.

Astheworldcontinuestoincreaseincomplexity,universitygraduateswillneedtobeequippedtocopewithrapidchangesintechnologyandtoentercareersthatmaynotyetbeenvisaged,withchangeofprofessionbeingcommonplace.Toproducegraduatesequippedforthisworkforce,itisessentialthateducatorsteachinwaysthatencouragelearnerstoengageindeeplearningwhichmaybebuiltuponinthelateryearsoftheircourse,andalsobetransferredtotheworkplace.
