microstructureandmicrohardnesswereassessed.Itwasfoundthatcontentofretainedausteniteinthemicrostructurevariedwiththeweldingconditionandthatheat-treatedsamplesshowedsecondaryhardening,associatedwithprecipitationphenomena.Nevertheless,asweldedsamplesshowedhigherwearresistancethanheattreatedspecimens.Underthesetestconditionspost-weldheattreatmentledtoareductioninwearresistance.Thebestwearbehaviourwasobservedinsamplesweldedwithlowheatinputandunderthelowestoxygenpotentialshieldinggasusedhere,intheasweldedcondition.Theinterveningmechanismwasmildoxidative.Theseresultswereexplainedintermsoftherelativeoxidationresistancestemmingfromdifferentweldingconditions.

ThestudypresentsquantitativeanalysisofparticleandgrainsizedistributionsinAl–Zn–Mg(7020)alloysubjectedtoaheattreatmentsimulatingtheweldingprocess.MicrostructuralanalysiswasdonebytheAPHELIONprogram.Somesignificantquantitativechangesinthesizeanddistributionofparticlesasafunctionoftheheattreatmenttemperaturewereobserved.Thechangeswererelatedtotheprocessofgrowth,dissolution,andprecipitationofnew,fineparticlesfromthesolidsolution.Theheattreatmentwasobservedtohavenoeffectonthegrainsizeandonthesizeofthelargestparticlesvisibleunderanopticalmicroscope.Thesephenomena,whichinfluencethestrengthhardeningandresidualstressfieldsdecidethepropertiesoftheweldedjoints.
