Oneofmyclassmateslikesdancingverymuch.Shehasbeenstudyingdancefortenyears,shehasstudiednationaldanceandballet,anddancehasmadeheranelegantgirl.Shehadateacherwhotaughthertodancebecauseshewantedtogotocollegebydancing.Ilikedancing,too,butIlikestreetdance.Ilikewatchingstreetdanceshowsverymuch,suchas"thisisstreetdance",Ithinkstreetdanceisverycool,canmakeapersonveryattractive,andstreetdancespreadloveandpeace,whichisverymeaningful.

Inthesummerrecessbetweenfreshmanandsophomoreyearsincollege,IwasinvitedtobeaninstructoratahighschoolleadershipcamphostedbyacollegeinMichigan.Iwasalreadyhighlyinvolvedinmostcampusactivities,andIjumpedattheopportunity.
Aboutanhourintothefirstdayofcamp,amidthefrenzyoficebreakersandforcedinteractions,Ifirstnoticedtheboyunderthetree.Hewassmallandskinny,andhisobviousdiscomfortandshynessmadehimappearfrailandfragile.Only50feetaway,200eagercamperswerebumpingbodies,playing,jokingandmeetingeachother,buttheboyunderthetreeseemedtowanttobeanywhereotherthanwherehewas.Thedesperatelonelinessheradiatedalmoststoppedmefromapproachinghim,butIrememberedtheinstructionsfromtheseniorstafftostayalertforcamperswhomightfeelleftout.
AsIwalkedtowardhimIsaid,“Hi,mynameisKevinandI’moneofthecounselors.It’snicetomeetyou.Howareyou?
”
Inashaky,sheepishvoicehereluctantlyanswered,“Okay,Iguess.”
Icalmlyaskedhimifhewantedtojointheactivitiesandmeetsomenewpeople.Hequietlyreplied,“No,thisisnotreallymything.”
Icouldsensethathewasinanewworld,thatthiswholeexperiencewasforeigntohim.ButIsomehowknewitwouldn’tberighttopushhim,either.Hedidn’tneedapeptalk,heneededafriend.Afterseveralsilentmoments,myfirstinteractionwiththeboyunderthetreewasover.
Atlunchthenextday,Ifoundmyselfleadingcampsongsatthetopofmylungsfor200ofmynewfriends.Thecamperswereeagerlyparticipated.Mygazewanderedoverthemassofnoiseandmovementandwascaughtbytheimageoftheboyfromunderthetree,sittingalone,staringoutthewindow.InearlyforgotthewordstothesongIwassupposedtobeleading.Atmyfirstopportunity,Itriedagain,withthesamequestionsasbefore:
“Howareyoudoing?
Areyouokay?
”
Towhichheagainreplied,“Yeah,I’mallright.Ijustdon’treallygetintothisstuff.”
AsIleftthecafeteria,ItoorealizedthiswasgoingtotakemoretimeandeffortthanIhadthought—ifitwasevenpossibletogetthroughtohimatall.
Thateveningatournightlystaffmeeting,Imademyconcernsabouthimknown.Iexplainedtomyfellowstaffmembersmyimpressionofhimandaskedthemtopayspecialattentionandspendtimewithhimwhentheycould.
ThedaysIspendatcampeachyearflybyfasterthananyothersIhaveknown.Thus,beforeIknewit,mid-weekhaddissolvedintothefinalnightofcampandIwaschaperoningthe“lastdance”.Thestudentsweredoingalltheycouldtosavoreverylastmomentwiththeirnew“bestfriends”—friendstheywouldprobablyneverseeagain.
AsIwatchedthecamperssharetheirpartingmoments,Isuddenlysawwhatwouldbeoneofthemostvividmemoriesofmylife.Theboyfromunderthetree,whostaredblanklyoutthekitchenwindow,wasnowashirtlessdancingwonder.Heownedthedancefloorasheandtwogirlsproceededtocutuparug.Iwatchedashesharedmeaningful,intimatetimewithpeopleatwhomhecouldn’tevenlookjustdaysearlier.Icouldn’tbelieveitwashim.InOctoberofmysophomoreyear,alate-nightphonecallpulledmeawayfrommychemistrybook.Asoft-spoken,unfamiliarvoiceaskedpolitely,“IsKevinthere?
”
“You’retalkingtohim.Who’sthis?
”
“ThisisTomJohnson’smom.DoyourememberTommyfromleadershipcamp?
”
Theboyunderthetree.HowcouldInotremember?
“Yes,Ido”,Isaid.“He’saveryniceyoungman.Howishe?
”
Anabnormallylongpausefollowed,thenMrs.Johnsonsaid,“MyTommywaswalkinghomefromschoolthisweekwhenhewashitbyacarandkilled.”Shocked,Iofferedmycondolences.
“Ijustwantedtocallyou”,shesaid,“becauseTommymentionedyousomanytimes.Iwantedyoutoknowthathewentbacktoschoolthisfallwithconfidence.Hemadenewfriends.Hisgradeswentup.Andheevenwentoutonafewdates.IjustwantedtothankyouformakingadifferenceforTom.Thelastfewmonthswerethebestfewmonthsofhislife.”
