Thehoneyeaterwasn’ttheonlysurpriseforthescientists.Theydiscoveredmorethan40previouslyunnownplantandanimalspecies—13birdsofparadise,20frogs,fourbutterflies,andfivepalms.“Wewerelieidsinacandystore,”Belerrecalls.“Everywherewelooed,wesawamaingthingswehadneverseenbefore.”
Thenewfoundspeciesdidn’tshyawayfromthescientists.Twolong-nosedechidnas—primitiveegg-layingmammals—letthevisitorspicthemupandtaethembactocamptostudythem.Anechidnalooslieahedgehogandisalsocalledaspinyanteater.
Belerthinstheanimalsweren’tscaredbecausetheyhadneverseenhumansbefore.“InalmostallpartsofNewGuinea,animalsarehuntedforfood,andbecauseofthis,theyareverycautiousofpeople,”heeplains.“Thisareagivesscientistsaplacewheretheycangotostudythebehavioursofanimalsthathavenotyetlearnedtobeafraidofpeople.”
