3.serve

Aslaveservesforhismaster.

serve表“为……服务；

接待（顾客）；

侍候吃饭、端（菜）；

服刑等”解时，常用作及物动词，故不与介词连用，上句中须去掉介词for。

例：

Weshouldserveourcountry.（为……服务）

Iamstillwaitingtobeserved.（接待）

Hehasservedhalfhissentence.（服刑）

△短语servefor表示的是“充当、用作、用……作；

够……用、适用于、对……合适。

”之意。

Thisboxwillhavetoserveforatableuntilthefurniturearrives.

Thishousewillserveformysimpleneeds,butwillitserveforthewholefamily?

4.enter

Sheenteredintothehouse.

enter表示“进来（去）”时后面不跟介词。

在非正式英语中多用comeinto和gointo。

Sheenteredtheroomwithoutbeingnoticed.

△短语enterinto常用于正式场合，表示：

a.“开始讨论、着手处理”。

Let’snotenterintodetailsatthismoment.

b.“积极参加、投入”。

WeenteredintothespiritofChristmas.我们开始感受到了圣诞节的气氛。

c.“开始、参与”（此时其后常接表“抽象概念的词”。

）例：

Theyenteredintoacontract/anagreement.他们订立了合同/达成了协议。

5.discuss

Peterrefusedtodiscussaboutthematter.

discuss表“讨论、谈论”时是及物动词，故上句中须去掉介词about。

Shehassomethingofgreatimportancetodiscusswithyou.

Theydiscussedwhethertheyhaddoneanythingwrong.

6.follow

Thechildfollowedafterhismotherupthestairs.

follow作“跟随；

沿着（走）；

遵循；

理解等”时，常为及物动词。

故上句中须删除介词after。

AugustfollowsJuly.

Thenyouaregoingtofollowheradvice,aren’tyou?

DoyoufollowwhatIamsaying?

7.return

Theydidn’treturnbackhometillnineo’clock.

return不与back连用，故上句中须去掉back。

但可用come/goback。

MyfriendandIreturntotownbythemidnightexpress.

It’ssuddenlycomebacktomewhereIsawyoulast.我突然回想起来最近在什么地方见过你。

8.repeat

Pleaserepeatthatagain.

repeat不与again连用，故上句须去掉again。

但可用say……again。

Youcansaythatagain!

9.congratulate

Shecongratulatedthemforwhattheyhadachieved.

congratulate（祝贺、道贺）常与介词on/upon连用。

Wecongratulatedhimonhavingpassedtheexamination.

10.passed

Ipastmydrivingtest.

动词pass的一般过去时变化是规则的，即passed;

而past不是动词形式，可作形容词、名词、介词和副词。

故应将上句中的past改为passed。

I’vebeenillforthepasttwoweeks.

Theoldmanislivinginthepast.这位老人现在生活在过去之中。

11.cross

Thesoldiersacrossedthebridgebymeansofladders.

作介词或副词的across不能单独作谓语，可将上句中的acrossed改为动词crossed或wentacross。

12.during

Duringyouareaway,I’llbekindtohim.

during（在……内；

在……时期中）是一介词，故不能作关联词。

上句须改为：

Whileyouareaway,I’llbekindtohim.例：

Notaworddidtheyexchangeduringthemeal.

13.between

You’retositbetweenTomandI.

介词between（在……之间）后的代词应用宾格，故上句应改为：

You’retositbetweenTomandme.

14.more

Myroomismuchmorebetterthantheonenextdoor.

上句中better已是形容词比较级，故须去掉more。

15．upstairs

Wegotoupstairstobed.

作副词时，upstairs及downstairs前不用介词，上句应改为：

Wegoupstairstobed.

16.lately

Hegotherefiveminuteslately.

lately是指“最近（recently）”,而late作副词时是表示“晚；

到很晚”，故上句应改为：

Hegotherefiveminuteslate.

△试比较以下含“形似意异”词语的句子：

price常与high/reasonable/right/low等连用，而expensive,cheap则常与表“物品”的名词连用。

18.fromplacetoplace

Fishesintheoceanarecarriedfromplacestoplacesbytides.

英语中通常讲究一个平行结构原则：

两个相同的名词放在一个平行结构里，名词一般用单数且前通常不加冠词。

facetoface（面对面）

handinhand（手牵手）

sidebyside（并肩）

shouldertoshoulder（并肩、协力）neckandneck（赛马等）并驾齐驱、不分上下daybyday（指渐进的过程）dayafterday（重复的单一的行动）

△但在谚语“以眼还眼以牙还牙。

”中则是：

aneyeforaneye（andatoothforatooth）

19.key

Thekeyofsuccessispreparation.

key作“最重要的事；

答案、解释、说明等”解时，其后常与to连用，构成thekeytosth.例：

Hereisakeytothegrammarexercises.

20.what

AllwhatIamafraidofistheirtakinghimtoParis.

关系代词型的what相当于thething（s）that（which），其前不能再用先行词。

上句可改为：

AllthatIamafraidofistheirtakinghimtoParis.或

WhatIamafraidofistheirtakinghimtoParis.
