Evenmoreinsultingistherecentmediatrendofregardingat-homewivesas“statussymbols”—likeanexpensivecar—flauntedbythesupposedlyfewmenwhocanaffordsuchaluxury.Theimplicationisthatmenwithat-homewiveshaveiteasierthanthosewhosewivesworkoutsidethehomebecausetheyhavethe“luxury”ofafull-timehousekeeper.Inreality,however,themenwhoarethesolewageearnersfortheirfamiliessufferalotofstresses.Thelossofajob—oreventhethreatofthathappening—isobviouslymuchmoredifficultwhenthatjobisthesolesourceofincomeforafamily.Bythesametoken,solewageearnershavelessflexibilitywhenitcomestoleavingunsatisfyingcareersbecauseofthelossofincomesuchajobchangeentails.Inaddition,manyhusbandsworkovertimeorsecondjobstomakemoremoneyneededfortheirfamilies.Forthesemen,itisthefamilythatthejobsupportsthatmakesitallworthwhile.Itisthebeliefthathavingamotherathomeisimportanttothechildren,whichmakessomanymengladlytakeontheburdenofbeingasolewageearner.

Suretherearedifferencesinapproachastowhatisconsideredpoliteandappropriatebehaviorbothonandoffthejob.Insomecultures“yes”means,“Ihearyou”morethan“Iagree.”Lengthofpleasantriesandgreetingsbeforegettingdowntobusiness,leveloftoleranceforbeingaroundsomeonespeakingaforeign(notunderstood)language,politenessmeasuredintermsofgallantryoretiquette(e.g.,standingupforawomanwhoapproachesatable,yieldingaseatonthebustoanolderperson,etc.)andmannerofexpecteddressareallexamplesofpossibleculturaldifferencesandtraditions.
